With how Landry is screwing Garrett Graves I'm wondering if Garrett mounts a campaign for governor.

A lot of people, specifically business people, will be upset with this veto.
I am not a fan of it either. However, a lot of other insurance reform bills did pass and Landry signed them.
This is a mark against Landry and a big one; it is hardly a death knell.

Awful news. Landry just showed us who he really is. A friend to trial attorneys and not having any interest in fixing the legal hellhole known as Louisiana. What a turd.

tort reform bill
I ask, because these things rarely, if ever, actually reform a thing.

Exactly.
And like I keep trying to tell you Baws, benefits to the insurance industry do not help insureds. They will continue to charge ridiculously high premiums. Because they can.

Good discussion in the press conference around the 15:00 mark about some of the bills passed in 2020 during the last tort reform session - and how LABI and others told us that we needed those bills passed to lower rates - yet rates only continued to go up after they were passed.
Any of you baws who are upset right now care to explain that?

Well, in regards to collateral source, ot was a watered down half measure that was so fricking convoluted that no one even knew how it fricking worked.
Jury trial change was never going to do anything.

quote:It is complicated, no doubt. But when people like Melerine are preaching how all of our evils are due to the collateral source windfall and rates will surely go down if we eliminate it and tortfeasors are paying less - it's just a hard pill to swallow when you consider that 60% of it was already eliminated to absolutely no avail. Are we really supposed to believe that remaining 40% will make all the difference here?

Currently, a jury never knows what the insurance company actually paid, and claimants are allowed to recover more money than was actually paid for their medical treatment. The extra money the claimant recovers is not required to be paid to the medical provider, but instead goes to the attorney and the claimant as a windfall.
This is absolutely insane.
Is LA the only state like this?

Landry can’t afford to veto that bill. It’s a real shame he’s even considering vetoing it. He might find that making a deal with trial lawyers like Gordon McKernan to get elected turns out to be a mistake that greatly hamstrings his ability to govern successfully.
Still cant believe Landry jumped in bed with the trail lawyers. He was going to win the election in a walk without them. He has really painted himself into a corner with this.
I knew something was up when all these pictures of him duck hunting with trial lawyers started appearing.

I think k you mean attorneys.
We have the worst legal climate and highest insurance costs in the country. It’s hard to imagine changes would make this worse..,

Anyone surprised by Landry’s behavior was not paying attention last year or was not being honest with themselves.
He’s only a conservative when it comes to social issues.

Not just most people, but most lawyers don't understand what the collateral source rule is or how it works.

Weird. Given that you would think insurance companies would flock to Louisiana.

Bring in the next Republican.
This dude is a POS puppet for trial attorneys.
He proceeds to tell us past laws were supposed to reduce insurance rates but didn't. So....I guess just give up on new legislation?
Then around 18:00 he is proud that he passed a bill that would increase the amount of time after a crash that an attorney could sue. Apparently Louisiana has so many lawsuits because attorneys only have a year to file a claim. He used fricking Maine as an example of how well this works. Maine.
He said everything I would expect an employee of Gordon McKernan would say.
