Landry recently unilaterally declined $71mm in federal funds for low income food programs. No strings attached here.

It’s money going to low income families to get food. We have a lot of low income folks who go hungry.

It’s not like this is even fiscally smart. The feds will just give our share to other states.

Can anyone give a reasonable explanation
As to why Landry would do this on behalf of the state?

They gotta pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Except crawfish farmers. They deserve the government handouts.

Was this on the same day he asked for federal funds for crawfish farmers?

In the long run, having more people on food stamps is the not the answer. You're breeding a whole culture of being lazy and getting government assistance

Business owners needing help vs people refusing to get jobs and sucking on that government tit are not the same

Most low income people I see are 50 lb overweight and don't work, they're not 'going hungry'.

I don't necessarily agree with the crawfish farmer bailout, but shelling out funds to workers / providers vs leeches is comparing apples to oranges.

Business owners should have savings and insurance. I know normal farmers carry crop insurance, so I'm sure crawfish farmers can get similar insurance for their product.

Bull crap. It won’t put a dent in dependency

FYI, we get a lot of funds from the feds based on low income needs. Medicare for one. Do you suggest we decline that too?

Louisiana is one of 15 states that declined to take part in a federal program

quote:

“LDOE considered it improper to commit Governor Landry and a new legislature to millions of dollars in increased spending toward a new government program,” department spokesman Ted Beasley wrote in a statement to the Illuminator.

“Additionally, LDOE determined that existing meal programs… would remain in effect during the summer of 2024.

Further, LDOE secured confirmation from the USDA that Louisiana could still enter into the Summer EBT program beyond January 1.”

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said he turned down the USDA offer because of his desire to reject “attempts to expand the welfare state,”
quote:

“Federal money often comes with strings attached, and more of it is often not a good thing,” Ian Fury, spokesperson for South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, wrote in an email to Chalkbeat. Low unemployment, the summer program’s administrative burden “robust existing food programs” were other reasons he said the state declined.
quote:

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a statement saying her opposition to Summer EBT was because the program doesn’t tightly restrict what foods families can buy and it would cost the state $2.2 million to administer

Not really, the program was just a big Federal giveaway to all students rich and poor that happen to be in the Federal Free Lunch Program get an extra 40 dollars a month in EBT cards over the summer.

If you can’t cover this then maybe you shouldn’t have children.

It seems ridiculous to not take federal funds, but at some point people have to stop relying on the government. This could be a very smart decision or a terrible decision.
