WASHINGTON — Children from low-income families in 35 states, four tribes and all U.S. territories will now receive permanent food assistance during the summer months when schools are closed, leaving children in 15 states — including Louisiana — excluded from the benefits.

The Washington Post and The Hill have reported that the 15 states — all with Republican leadership — turned down the additional food assistance.

The Illuminator reached a spokesperson with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, which oversees food benefits, to ask about why the benefits aren’t being made available. She had not provided a response as of late Wednesday.

Low-income families in participating states will receive $40 each month for each eligible school-aged child, up to $120, to buy groceries beginning in the summer of 2024. The cash will come via electronic benefit transfer, often called EBT, and will be added to food assistance debit cards.

Congress authorized the program’s permanent status in December 2022.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that the program will reach 21 million children — or around 70% of U.S. children eligible for government meal programs — in the states, tribes and territories that signed on to be part of the initial launch.

A list of implementing agencies in those states, tribal lands and territories will be available in the spring of 2024, according to the USDA. USDA is encouraging families to check for updates at www.fns.usda.gov/sebt/household.

Notably the participating four tribes have lands in Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi, three states that are not part of the launch.

Besides Louisiana, the USDA said other states that will not provide the new grocery benefits for low-income children include: Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming.

Parents should feed their own kids its not the job of the government. What does that have to do with pro life?

Yes. Making someone wholly dependent on any third-party, but particularly the government, is the most anti-human agenda that exists.

It degrades the fundamental aspects of being a human being and is a de facto form of slavery.

Are you in favor of slavery?

VT would certainly be the political outlier here.

What is the rationale given for refusing the benefits?

Though if you actually wanted to discuss the topic, you wouldn't be trolling the board by evoking an abortion shite-throwing festival.

The job of the government is to micro-manage mothers in the name of being “pro-life” but the government can’t provide food for kids in the name of being pro-life?

Starting a long time ago and continuing to this day, state's rights were sold off by each States' congressional delegation in order to give those persons (congressional delegation) more power by virtue of controlling tax money. So they've raised taxes. They've increased federal bureaucracy and encouraged states to do the same. They have told the states that if you don't do what our Dept of Ed (or whatever dept) says, we will take this money away that you have given us. They hold this carrot out over the state. If they state doesn't capitulate they give them the stick by taking it away.

The federal government controls so many aspects of day to day life that they have no business in. But our representatives gave them the power to do so. This is just another example.

Denying funding for roads certainly wouldn’t promote valuing life.

Why do they need the extra money?

School age kids in hometown get school lunch meals delivered to their house over the summer break. I imagine LA has the same thing.

Saying someone can't kill a baby is "micro-managing?"

This is the intelligence of someone that knowingly and voluntarily has sex with homeless people.

Just because we don't want to allow baby-killing doesn't mean that feeding them is our responsibility.

The idea that parents have kids that they can't feed is justification for more abortion.
