all tsunamis are energy transfer through the oceans water, particle to particle of water, that are only detectable while still at sea by depth gauge

There is a good example of this by lining up billiard balls touching each other then hitting one end of the line. one ball in, opposite, only one ball out. The middle balls stay put - same with all the middle "particles" of water. If the balls were elastic, you would see the "depth change"

There should also be the phenomenon of water level going down severely as water is "drawn in" away from the coast prior to the arrival of the wave. This happens during storms in the gulf and around Florida - if there is a large storm surge in one region - water is drawn from enough adjacent regions to make up for the displacement and water in adjacent regions to the surge go down. Storm surge in Tampa Bay equals exceptionally low water in Mobile Bay..

Had is all wrong. Not drain the swamp, swamp the swamp with salt water intrusion. That's a better way to kill it.

Fortunately, global warming will evaporate all the oceans, so the mountain landslide will just crash down harmlessly into the dry former seabed, averting any tsunami catastrophe.

Saw graphics that put all of south east Louisiana (and even extended into Mississippi, North of Baton Rouge, a little bit I think) in the 140+ mph gust winds for Ida. I'm not sure we saw half that, and we weren't too far west of the eye.

Literally no respectable or official weather service predicted 140+mph gusts north of Baton Rouge and into Misdissippi. They predicted 110+mph gusts to Baton Rouge, though, and here in northeast Ascension parish where the western edge of the eye passed, they were spot fricking on with that prediction. Somewhere is going to receive an accurate prediction and most areas are going to get a “bust” in every single weather event.

I wouldn’t cry if NY and DC got taken out. Might just save our country.

Mega Tsunami Watch In Effect US East Coast

I find this strange. I mean, there will literally be hours of warning. How are you going to evacuate the east coast in a matter of hours?

Dude, I'm a geologist. The 2004 tsunami was caused by a release of an untold amount of energy as convergent plates displaced at the sea floor. Think shoving yourself forward in the bath tub. A volcanic island with a landslide will displace water but not to the extent it happens at plate boundaries. Thailand was just to the east of the epicenter. Sri Lanka farther to the west. It's a small island in the large ocean.

I’m just having fun with his thread. Don’t take it too seriously as I’m just playing along with the described worst case scenario. If 100 foot waves actually came rolling through, there would be so much destruction that it would dwarf anything ever seen by mankind.

But I do like that you are a geologist as you’ll have actual insight we could only speculate about.

The OP of this thread is a nice highlight of the general intelligence of this board.

I thought it was common knowledge that the biblical story of Noah and the flood were actual events burned into the collective consciousness of many different peoples? We seen this before. It’s just been a while.

That's Hollywood. That's not how tsunamis work.

It can not be done. That has unspeakable implications if it were to happen, which is by no means a certainty

Two minute video on the potential impact of this. No clue if this could happen or not, but would rather not found out.
