Kansas recalls 700+ license places for containing the word "JAP"

I consider myself a pretty big WWII buff, but never once have I heard the argument that 'Jap' was considered a derogatory term.

I'm no demographic expert, but are there even any Japanese people in Kansas to be offended by this?

Considering Louisiana's Japanese population is between 1500-2000, I'd bet that most people have never interacted with a Japanese person.

Do you normally reference people’s nationality or ethnicity when you address them?

I thought Nip was the racist term for Japanese people.

I worked at a restaurant in college that had a item called Stuffed Firecracker Jalapeños. On the guest check the abbreviation was Stuffed Japs. I had an Asian family lose their shite one time over it. Sensitivity is debilitating.

No I think nip is the term for Koreans, and slope is the term for Filipinos.

My wife's grandmother was Japanese. She wouldn't have given a shite. She loved America.

100% chance the offended people were Johnson County or Douglas County sky screaming stay-at-home mom's with degrees from KU in psychology.

Jap, short for Japanese was a term used in WW2, much like Kraut for Germans. I guess the grocery stores should remove all the sauerkraut from the shelves as well. The derogatory term for asians is "asian". Does anyone know if they have "WOP" tags or "JEW" tags?

In the 50s we used 'Nip' for Japanese. 'Nipon' is a Japanese word for 'Japan.'

I'm not even a buff and I knew it was somewhat derogatory although I never knew why. Why is shortening a word somehow vile and reprehensible.

My grandmother clearly used Jap in a derogatory fashion. She never forgave them for Pearl. They not only attacked the US, they did it on her birthday. Nope, she never forgave them and she never said the Japanese. It was always the Japs.

And she didn't have a racist bone in her, but she never forgave Japan.
