Tomato, tomahto.
It is curious though that your question was about immigration, and the majority of the posts only addressed illegal immigration.

why wouldnt it be a big deal?
how many people here would have even been born, much less Americans, under a merit based immigration system? how many of your parents or grandparents or whatever would have been let it?
my dad was born in Ireland, his parents came over when he was 2. his dad was muscle for the Irish mob, they never would have gotten in on "merit".
my dad ended up at UPenn and the Wharton School, then a Marine Corps fighter pilot, than a pilot for Delta for 30+ years. His brother went to Temple, then was in the Air Force for 20 years. his son, my cousin, is now a General in the Air Force.
(correction: my uncle also went to UPenn, it was my aunt who went to Temple. my other aunt went to Villanova then became a nun. also my cousin was a pilot in the Air Force but is actually a Brigadier General in the Guard)
my moms parents were Swiss/German and Apostolic Christian missionaries, he was also a minister, so they probably would be allowed in, but they spent 20+ years in Argentina and Mexico before coming here, so who knows.
my mom was also military by the way, a physical therapist in the Navy. thats how she and my dad met. she actually outranked him when they got married on the base on Guam. he likes to say she ordered him to do it and he didnt have any choice.
are we decent enough Americans for this board?

The Spleen
Wasn't your dad in a union (maybe I am mistaking you for another bama poster). The son of a union guy should know that unions historically have been AGAINST immigration. That changed around 20 years ago when manufacturing unions collapses and the SEIU took control.
I posted this yesterday, care to explain it?
It's harry reid circa 1993.
quote:
“Our federal wallet is stretched to the limit by illegal aliens getting welfare, food stamps, medical care and other benefits often without paying any taxes. Safeguards like welfare and free medical care are in place to boost Americans in need of short-term assistance. These programs were not meant to entice freeloaders and scam artists from around the world,” Reid said.
The Nevada Democrat went on to say, “If making it easy to be an illegal alien is not enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant? No sane country would do that, right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship and guarantee full access to all public and social services this society provides. And that is a lot of services. Is it any wonder that two-thirds of the babies born at taxpayer expense in county-run hospitals in Los Angeles are born to illegal alien mothers?”

First off, the issue has never been IMMIGRATION. It's ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION that is the issue. I can't, for the life of me, understand how liberals get the two confused. Being against illegal immigration does not equal being against immigration as whole. That's the first talking point that needs to be shot down.
Second, the hispanic population includes, if we use a little logic, individuals who are here illegally. When the surveyor calls, no person is going to admit to being in the country illegally. So there's that.
Third, the issue is, as stated above, illegal immigration because it skews the economic stability of the country. For example, illegals often receive medicaid, social security checks, welfare benefits and/food stamps, education, WIC, and a host of other federal and state run benefits WITHOUT PAYING INTO THE SYSTEM. Sure, they pay sales taxes to help support the state and local governments when they purchase items from retail stores, but on programs that operate off of income deductions and/or taxes, they take and do not put in. That is the problem with illegal immigration. There's no white supremacist conspiracy, no racism, no bigotry, no (insert liberal talking point) about it. It's simple economics.
So ask yourself, is it really just to rob Peter, the tax paying citizen, to pay Juan, the illegal with 10 "dreamers" in tow?
Also, just as a side note, the hispanic population, even legals, is bound to grow at a faster rate than others given that a massive majority of hispanics are straight line catholics that don't believe in contraceptives.

The post I responded to insinuated that opposition to immigration was based in maintaining one's political power. That political power in question is predominantly white. That to me is a brand of white supremacy.
And again, many in this thread are conflating immigration and illegal immigration. There is nothing wrong with legal immigration. There is nothing wrong with being against illegal immigration. Let's not conflate the two.

If you read back through this thread, it is conservatives that are conflating the two. The original post only asks about immigration, and most of the responses talk about illegal immigration.

It isn't. Illegal immigration is a big deal. People accessing services they aren't paying for is a big deal. Demanding entitlements one isn't entitled to is a big deal.

This may sound crazy to some people, but the way I see it,it's not so much about about this, melding of the races is probably inevitable.
I see it as preservation of The Country, I don't know why I should care, I will probably be dead anyway, but at some point,if we continue to allow illegal immigration at the current rate,The Nation and culture are going to be predominantly Catholic.
I don't care from a religious perspective, but most predominantly Catholic Countries are the most corrupt on Earth, and mostly shitholes. It would soon derail This Nation from the vision on which it was founded.
The economic reasons are also very important.

I would argue that the intent of the OP (and the attached article) is to push a narrative that the "dreamers" and their families are indeed immigrants. All while omitting the fact that they are illegal. Especially given that there is a direct reference to hispanics, which the vast majority of illegal immigrants happen to be.
Also, as I pointed out, the percentage of hispanics in the population is going to be skewed by illegal immigration given that no respondent to a survey is going to admit to being in the country illegally.

All you have to do is look at the Asians. Statistically speaking, they are the most successful demographic in the country.

Possibly one of the dumbest sentiments I’ve ever read. Why is it that whites are the only people in the world that cannot be proud of their heritage? Of course there are some who take that to the extreme (e.g. white supremacy), but that requires a healthy dose of ethnocentrism.
Preferring your own culture to another does not entail that you believe your culture is superior. It’s only natural to prefer the culture you were raised in to another.

This.
There's a choice to be made: open borders or welfare state. The two of them in conjunction with each other are NOT a sustainable model. Absolutely no way to make the math work.

You say my comment is dumb, and follow it up with a question that my post did not even in the slightest bit imply.

What the OP meant is that he can't understand the immigration issue outside of racism.

Thats not what I meant.
When discussing illegal immigrants there are several false statements that are taken as fact like the recieve food stamps and medicare. My co worker had some facts and as crazy as it sounded to me, makes more sense than some of the posts that ive read
