I was 50 before I got a credit card. I absolutely hate them. I have one just to show credit worthiness. I keep a 250 balance on it just to show activity on it.

Having a CC doesn't equal carrying debt
I know. I am asking a certain individual why that is a bad thing.
At my age, doing so hasn't hurt me yet. In fact the available credit only helps.
The individual I was asking speaks as if this advice is bad advice because the individual who gave that advice is of less than desireable knowledge. Good advice is good advice regardless of the origin.
Or maybe it was just an attack against the person giving the advice since this person is of less than desireable knowledge. I do not know the advice giver, so I do not know.

Sounds like a terrible vendor.
It was AMEX.
When we got the card they required us to pay it off each month. After they switched to allow balances to carry, they decided that we wouldn't be kept.

If you can't pay off your credit card monthly, you shouldn't have one.by theballguyIf it was up to me, no one would have one. They're just not needed. I say this as a concession so that some people can handle cash flow issues. Still, shouldn't everyone have enough cash on hand to handle temporary overages?
I put everything on my credit card and pay it off every month. Been doing this for 15 years. I like the points and the security of my card gets hacked vs my debit card.

Points man. I always pay off my personal card monthly. My business card i'll leave a little debt on it (200-500 or so).

I love the cash back from my credit card

the event that someone steals your cards info it is easier to sort out vs a debit card and you’re not out any liquid money while the dispute process is ongoing.
Your bank sucks. Anything with a Visa/MC/AMEX logo, debit or credit, is covered by the same fraud protection. USAA gives me the money back first, within hours, during the investigation. They even did this when someone paid their mortgage out of my account, not just small fraud.

Ehh, someone hasn't been a broke arse needing new tires. Must be nice to be born with a silver spoon.

I put those on my Amex this morning, and paid for it from my bank account about 90 seconds later.

Welcome to your father’s life. I agree with you totally, but you overlook that many many many folks, wealthy or poor don’t care if they die in huge debt. It’s not their problem then and they never promised their kids anything. They only need to get what they need/want until then. If they fail they know they can go on welfare and have no consequences. They think your thrift or pay my own way mentality is absurd. Sad to say you have become a dinosaur.
BUT my friend you can feel great knowing you are your own man/woman and didn’t have to relay on anyone or pay stupid interest and have all you need and will NOT leave people holding the bag. Cheers to you.

Now it's 25 year olds "borrowing" $5k from their teacher moms and never repaying it.

Good for them. Any man that can’t pay his own way or his debts off early when he needed to borrow is chicken chit.

I agree but you also have a window on big expenses.
Example: Need a new air conditioner that costs 5K and only have 2K to pay, use the credit card and pay it off in 60 days.
Where I agree is people aren’t disciplined enough to pay off later that month or within a reasonable timeframe.
The banks love consumers paying 20% interest rates. It’s crooked but the consumer signed off on it.
