They're doing the bait and switch pivot move where they claim one thing (Iran wasn't Muslim) and then pivot to something more reasonable (Iran wasn't a hyper-specific type of extremist Muslim) once proven wrong, only to go back to their original attempt when educated people aren't around (to promote the amplification in the echo chamber they clearly want to repeat)

The key piece is the urban versus rural divide. The urban centers were pretty diverse religiously but the rural areas suffered economically which pushed the rural folks into the cities. The urban area was around 48% of the population versus 53% who lived in the rural areas. The mass migration of the rural inbreeds into the city is what caused the collapse. The White revolution is what allowed for the takeover.

None of this disputes the fact that Iran was a super-majority Muslim nation prior to the Shah taking over (which was almost 40 years prior to the 1979 revolution), and for the 1300 years or so prior to that.
You can't try to distinguish away from those facts/reality.

It’s really a function of Gulf Arabs vs Persians, Shiite vs Shia….although the religious overtones mask the geopolitical struggles, which are much more important to each side
