They can't check bags or body screen travelers but they can help with line management and ID checks. That will take TSA agents off those jobs and into more bag/body screenings improving line times.

TSA agents will move you into random lines which make the flow faster. They also help with exiting through. ICE agents don't need training to do that.

They weren’t answering questions or helping the line at all. They were literally just looking at lines. Only people helping were MSY staff in green shirts

They are helping with the lines by freeing up TSA workers to be on the lines. This isn't secret info. It is publicly stated reason for them being there.

Neither am I but I can say "ID Please" and "Place your phone/boarding pass on this machine." Also I can wave people through the metal detector.
The X-ray machine and testing luggage for drugs would be a different story.
Anyway, I can see how ICE could help.
