There is not a fruit or nut that can’t thrive in California, in fact the fruits and nuts are now interchangeable.

It's like any other produce. You can probably grow more here but your growing season largely is limited because the further north you go, the longer the winter . In Central America, the conditions are ideal for adequate supply year round.

Don't we essentially own the banana plantations anyway?

One of my cousins grew up with a banana tree so I know it's possible

I don't think we have the optimal climate to mass produce them though

I don't know about you but I'd pay as much as it takes to get American grown bananas because I don't hate my country.

Growing them here does not equal higher cost to consumers

Likely a different mutation. There are hundreds of types of banana's.

The ones we eat today will probably be gone in 20 years, poor example for congress to bring up.

I would imagine that Hawaii and PR would be prime candidates for the crop...

Real question... with greenhouses and technology, couldn't anything be grown anywhere?

yes but the cost of building and maintaining a green house vs a field is significant

I could see that with upfront costs, maybe.

But... the technology infused greenhouse would produce a yield untouched by weather, insects, acts of God and whatnot.. unlike a field dependent on whatever nature decides to serve up.

I have a friend who made rum moonshine from bananas. I can't remember how good it was.
