Cubs, IMHO you have the wrong idea about capitalism.

The abuses that we've seen in history from capitalism stem not from some basic defect in the whole system, but from a failure of human beings to manage the system in a "good faith" manner. No nation, no organization, not even a small organization, can function well unless the members and leaders set aside the selfishness of human nature and work for the good of the group or organization. Communism fails, too, because of that.

The Auto Unions became quite Leftist in Detroit. Once that happened, there would be no more "good faith" working with Corporate Management, and so, after a long time, the whole system weakened. We still have auto making in Detroit, but, it's not like before.

Labor Unions can do great things! But they can also do awful things, like killing an industry or corporation, when the company can no longer be profitable. It's a little bit of this and a little bit of that, because Corporate Management can sometimes be infested with greedy leaders.

It is Leftism that has ruined our inner cities, not Capitalism.

Doesn't seem like Zohran understands two basic tenets of the American experience:

1. People move away from bad things that hurt them, financially and otherwise.

2. Wealthy people have massive mobility. And many of them can run their businesses from most anywhere.

I don't think he's dumb enough to not realize this, but it's hard to tell with commies. He may be guzzling his own koolaid.

And the Auto Union leadership in Detroit failed to realize that the very industry that provided them with a good living was facing a new and very dire threat from the emerging auto industry in the South.

We Southerners are lucky that the Yankees didn't vote into power another Federal Govt that would invade us and burn down our industry again, so that Northern Industrial Supremacy would remain forever unchallenged by those dirty, hookworm infested Anglo-Irish.

When I was getting my post graduate degrees, one of my classes we had to write a paper about this and how the long-term effect of purposely not embracing technology put our auto industry behind.

It was very eye opening and made me detest Unions.

I don't know about that.

What I identify as the main reasons that Detroit collapsed are:

1. Auto unions

2. The concentration of American auto production into the "Big Three" companies at the same time that the industry was moving our of Detroit proper to escape the union wages. So the biggest plants moved out to avoid the unions and the smaller plants closed down.

3. Gross city administrative mismanagement. The municipality was content to tailor everything from the development of roads and public transit programs entirely to automobile production. Once that industry began to decline, poor (mostly black) people couldn't get around to other jobs that might have been available, and there weren't enough of those anyway because the City of Detroit neglected to do anything to attract any other type of industry into the city (which is an example of too little capitalism, not too much), relying again solely on auto production.

4. Did I mention unions?

5. Early 70s oil embargo, now cars are being built smaller and people are turning to Japanese imports. Buying fewer Fords and Chevys and more Hondas and Toyotas.

6. Race relations. Once again, diversity is not our strength.

7. And finally, unions.

Careful what you wish for. He’s chasing a lot of blue voters to other places where as we all know, they will continue to vote blue
