The House will vote next week on legislation making daylight saving time permanent nationwide, reviving a years-long effort to eliminate the twice-yearly clock changes.
Daylight saving time has been observed throughout most of the U.S. since the 1960s, shifting clocks forward one hour from March to November. Most states observe daylight saving time, with the exceptions of Arizona and Hawaii.
The Sunshine Protection Act, an effort supported by President Trump, passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee 48-1 in May and allows states to opt out. Proponents of the measure argue the shift causes sleep disturbances and reduces productivity.

Should it pass the House, it could face opposition in the Senate from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who warned it would “push winter sunrises to an absurdly late hour” and that “kids would either walk to school in the pitch black or schools would have to push back start times.”

Or push winter sunsets to an absurdly early hour.

not having to get into the deer stand at bum frick 6:00 AM sounds lovely!

Again, this is a latitude issue. Northern latitudes where I am at essentially need day light saving time. Southern latitudes don’t. We need barbershop angled striped time zones, not vertical ones.

An extra hour to hunt deer on weekday evenings? Yes please.

I’ve seen this movie before. The House knows it will die in the Senate, but makes them look like the good guys. The Senate does not care what the public thinks, see the SAVE Act.

During the winter, I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. That extra hour would make a nice difference in December and January!

Truly it doesn’t matter as states are enacting laws for this. Arizona permanently froze into Mountain Standard Time is an example

But states are only able to stay on real time year round, they are not allowed to stay on Day Light Saving year round

Personally, I look forward to the early sunsets in the winter. Can't stand this shite now where it's daylight at 8 pm, but to each their own.

You have a point.
Idk when I was in Alaska it was fine if everything was standard time. Long summers short winters kinda override everything. Plus it's also weird for the folks in Juneau near Seattle. They should be in the same time zone but arent which makes time changes even worse down that way.
I can see why people down here want it because like you said it doesnt matter.

Say what? Instead of getting dark at 5 it will get dark at 6?
I’m kind of sick of Tom Cotton.

We switched to year-round daylight savings time in 1974. Everyone hated it and we switched back.
It’s interesting to note how this is lost information in 2026

They’ll frick it up like everything else.

What I’m hearing you say is you expected that there would be (and should be?) widespread knowledge amongst the current generations of this 1974 incident. And I’m hearing concerns me.

Standard time is about 14 weeks.
It is dark in December early in the morning whether it is daylight savings or standard time.
Sunrise moves that much during the year.
"Dark" in the morning is such a patsy excuse and it pisses me off every December when kids are going to school in the dark anyway.
