Education?

Healthcare?

Insurance?

How much better would this world be if Wall Street no longer had the ability to make money in these fields? Imagine how much better all our lives would be if Millionaires and Billionaires couldn't take advantage of people trying to get educated or healthy or protecting themselves with insurance. The middle and lower class individual would retain far more of their wealth.

State governments and law enforcement come to mind.

You could make the argument healthcare should be as well, but that discussion usually causes this place to melt down on both sides.

Actually it would be much worse.

A hell of a lot worse than you think it is right now with them making money in these fields.

All of those fields are services tendered to someone and labor is not and will never be free regardless of who's paying for it.

Making them not for profit removes a lot of the incentives to improve those systems.

Show me one public-only industry that has better outcomes than private industry.

I never said make labor free. You dont understand what not for profit means. They would charge just enough to cover overhead and nothing more. Pay for labor and materials and real estate costs. But no stocks and no CEOs making 7 figures in these specific industries. Limit salary to 200% of the national average.

This entire line of thinking is backwards as frick and ignores history and reality. Education, Insurance and Health Care were all far less expensive and better before government got involved. Rich people aren’t the evil doers. That entire world view is based upon a lie.

Healthcare is expensive because of insurance companies trying to meet their bottom line and Malpractice costs.

Education was more referring to entities like University of Phoenix who scam people with subpar education.

I could make an argument even against that. For most of history, the US military was basically a monopoly. But as of late, contract defense firms have become an option and often cost less.

That is completely false. The largest driver of medical costs also happens to be the largest provider of medical coverage - Medicare.

Most of the issues we have with those industries come from government, not the industries, themselves.

Profit is payment to people who allocate resources efficiently.

Your question is like asking

“Are there certain industries where people should not be paid?”

God forbid a company try to make their bottom line. what a bunch of evil assholes. Guess what entity put the laws and regulations and structure in place to make insurance so expensive. You’re blaming a symptom and not the disease.

A fool and his money parted. Always been that way and always will. I, nor you are anyone else is responsible for their poor choices. I don’t feel bad for them and neither should you. Who I do feel bad for are the taxpayers that continue to fund subpar educations kindergarten all the way through college and have no choice in the matter.

Average margins in healthcare are pretty low (usually single digits).

Removing the margins doesn’t result in much improvement, if any at all. The CEO making a really nice salary is meaningless when that salary is 0.0000001% of that organization’s operating expenses.
