Dumb bill.
More sinister, but not as sinister as the other Fla bill floating around:
quote:
A defamation bill filed this week by Sen. Jason Brodeur waters down some of the language in the Florida House version but keeps most of what would make it much easier for people to sue the news media.
Both Brodeur’s bill SB 1220 and HB 991, filed by Rep. Alex Andrade, R-Pensacola, propose sweeping changes to Florida’s libel and defamation law. They both would automatically presume information from anonymous sources to be false and would prevent journalists from shielding the identity of sources if they are sued.
But SB 1220 doesn’t include a controversial provision about “false light,” which would expand the definition of defamation to giving “publicity” about someone that would be “highly offensive to a reasonable person.”
The Senate bill also doesn’t include the House language that someone can be defamed if they are accused of discriminating based on race, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, even if it’s true.

Clear violations of 1A...free speech absolutism...as usual it's more "Don't tread on me - tread to them."

This is what happens when either party gets a supermajority in both chambers and the governors office. There’s no check and balance.

Good luck getting that passed that's a heaping load of horseshite if it's true.

I don't keep up with Stew Peters. Regardless, I was referring to the video he posted of the Florida lawmaker dude.

It still only applies to schools? Unsure what else you're seeing.
I'm not for any limited free speech, and I'm not pro-Israel at all, but I don't see how I am wrong in saying that.

He told me I was crazy for saying that Oz wouldn't win PA. He believed that Oz had a better chance of winning PA than McCormick and Barnette.

I dont see how anyone can except this. Oh it only limits free speech of students and teachers, SO! It's anti 1st Amendment. Schools one day, who's next?

Don't you think that's a pretty big thing to leave out? I get that it would be difficult, maybe impossible, to devise a net to catch the paid smear merchants without dragging in legitimate small time bloggers but at least in theory I'd like to know who is funding a particular narrative. (Even the ones I agree with.)

Trump Propgandists
I still don't understand all these people embracing him. The guy lost to a corpse with dementia, helped cost us control of the Senate twice, and spread his cheeks for Doctor Lockdown.
Reagan was before my time but I understand why a lot of people defend him to the death. The guy won 2 landslide elections and came within 4,000 votes of winning all 50 states in 1984. The dude was a winner. Trump is a fricking loser. Embracing losers is what the Dems are supposed to be known for. They still embrace Al Gore, John Kerry, Jimmy Carter, and Hillary Clinton.

Shockingly, the bill doesn't mention DeSantis once.
"(e) “Elected state officer” means the Governor, the
154 Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the
155 Legislature."
Yup doesn't mention DeSantis one time unless you call him Governor DeSantis well then it does mention him directly. Also really interesting that the author of the Bill is one of DeSantis' biggest cheerleaders.

A fair and trustworthy news media is crucial to a Republic but the Fourth Estate has abandoned it's post. The reform of libel and defamation laws is definitely needed for the survival of western civilization. Personally, I would limit journalistic protections and access to stand-alone entities only. Carlos Slim and Jeff Bezos are too rich to be concerned about a couple of million dollars in judgements, or even profitability. If the NYT and WP needed to at least break even to keep the lights on they might hesitate to tell one blatant lie after another.

The us vs them mentality is so dangerous. Republicans are too busy trying to own the Dems to actually talk about real policy.
