This is exactly the scenario where ranked voting could be beneficial for the NR, assuming they haven't reached their absolute limit of support as is.
The problem is that it's very likely they did reach their absolute limit of support.

That 35-40% threshold appears to be the RN's ceiling nationwide in France. They were stuck there in both of Macron's presidential wins as well.
Its why they will struggle to ever win a presidential election or achieve a legislative majority. The other 60-65% will always team up against them in the second round runoffs.
