They inserted a furin cleavage site onto the spike protein that could not have occcured naturally, and they coded for double arginine with amino acids CGG-CGG which doesn’t occur naturally and is a hallmark of the gain of function research due to it being the easiest way to code for arginine using gene splicing techniques.
