they're not terribly expensive and have lots of fun applications if you're careful with them

This is a valid point and as a parent I'm all for getting the drugs off the streets.
BUT - When they track someone from a known drug location (south Texas, California) "Then Invent" a reason to pull them over, call the dog who alerts on every car and do a search, it seems a little intrusive to me.
If you watch State Boys on youtube you will see them pull over car after car with out of state tags (lots of rentals), following too close is their go to violation.

Yeah, but sometimes the criminals they're catching are government agents using this tech to spy on and harass citizens.

Crime cameras are great as long as they are used to do just that. The problem is the government at all levels always seems to overreach with stuff like this.

Please explain to the class how your face is captured by a camera that can only see the rear of your vehicle.

There are no tollbooths or people to collect money from drivers entering or exiting the zone. Instead, Transport for London (TFL) has installed hundreds of CCTV cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition. These cameras read the license plates of vehicles traveling through the ULEZ and compare them against the car or truck that it is registered to in order to determine if the vehicle in question is compliant with the emissions limits of the zone. If it isn’t, the driver is assessed a $15.88 (12.50 gbp) fee each day they drive. Should they fail to pay it, they will be charged a $228.71 (180 gbp) fine.
What’s more, there is no legal immunity for those who happen to live or work in these designated areas. Drivers who reside within the ULEZ are required to pay up just like anyone else, meaning that even a short commute to the grocery store would result in a charge. And to make matters worse, ULEZ rules operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week (with the exception of Christmas).
Not exactly the same, but in 2017 I rented a car from Enterprise and picked it up at Heathrow shortly after landing. We immediately left London and headed north to the Midlands to go visit some distant relatives.
We drove around the English countryside for a week. The following week we had a flat rented in central London near Hyde Park. As luck would have it, there is an Enterprise drop-off location in the parking garage underneath Hyde Park.
So we arrived at the flat, got check in, then I immediately returned the car back to Enterprise at their Hyde Park location.
A few weeks after returning home, I received a letter from Enterprise containing a citation that had been issued against the car I had rented.
The citation was for "Driving in the Congestion Zone Without a Permit". Sounded very Orwellian. They had a picture of the car driving around a traffic circle with a London bus right next to me. I remember it well because I was afraid that bus was going to sideswipe me.
Cost me $100. I paid it only because I wanted to continue renting cars from Enterprise.
