Do you think it is fair that Chinese automakers can use Mexico to ship cars tax free?

So China is building massive auto plants in Mexico to flood the US with cars tax free. POTUS Trump mentioned it in a speech and said if he was not elected this tax free import from Mexico could cause a bloodbath regarding the US auto industry.
Do we protect the US auto industry or do we subsidize Chinese manufacturing through MEXICO?

Do China and the relevant Mexican entities agree on the terms of the arrangement?
Then yes, it is fair.
Is it advantageous to the United States? No.
Should our policy change to address it? Yes.

We agreed to a free trade deal with Mexico, not a free trade deal with China using Mexico as a middle man.

Yeah but Biden doesn't say hurtful things on Twitter so we're giving up something either way

It’s a loophole that could be closed pretty quickly. Require an extremely high% of parts be sourced in North America, with assembly be done there as well. I believe Trump would negotiate something, Biden will roll over.

Like I said, our policy needs to change.

eh. Its OK to be pro-free trade, but use strategic tariffs to deal with a potentially horrendous trade crisis. As long as he plans to do something in parallel to deal with Unions, over-regulation, and green mandates that are making American cars uncompetitive.

Based on Mexico's recent actions concerning illegals, we should terminate any agreement we have with Mexico, including the so called "free trade"...
Mexico needs the U.S., not the other way around...
NOTHING that can and should be produced in this country should enter this country tax free...

Buy a Chinese Car at your own risk. I can't Imagine buying a Chinese made car.

I have no problem with tariffs, as long as they are actually geared towards protecting American industries (such as auto, etc.). Where tariffs lose me is when they are levied on items/industries we don't produce in sufficient quantities to meet domestic demand and so it just raises costs for the consumer with no benefit to the United States.

When we negotiate "free trade" especially with countries like China they always have an unfair advantage because their industry is state owned. They may say, okay we won't place tariffs on those imports to our country in exchange for our exports to your country without tariffs. The problem is, since we are more capitalist our government does not provide industry with the support and subsidies on the front end like China does. So in order to respond with reciprocity and make the trade fair and free, capitalists societies have to respond with tariffs on the back end.

Our government has bailed out our automakers so much that you can claim they are subsidized too.
Tariffs promote more cost, and lead to less quality among protected industries.
We have propped up our industries forever to pay workers high wages. Its just another form of socialism.

"Free trade" is one of the biggest lies politicians spew.

How does it hurt the US?
If you want to claim that it's not advantageous to the US auto industry I'd agree, but that's not the same as the entirety of the US. Protectionism will always help somebody but that doesn't mean it helps everybody.
