If he's an engineer then won't have any issue getting another job
Here’s the problem: he’s very young and hasn’t been working as an a engineer for very long
The market for engineers is oversaturated with new grads that have no skills or work experience. There are way too many engineers relative to what the current demand for engineers is. Those who have more experience will come out on top and those who have barely any experience will struggle to find jobs.

Back then, when a company was doing bad, it would lay people off. Now, the company can make record profits, and your arse is still getting laid off.
Outrageous that we let corporations get away with this shite.

Why does a man and his wife need to work to pay to a federal government that is filled with waste? If your "buddy" was not needed, certainly he knew he wasn't.
Might want to give Chuckie Schumer a call. He loves to waste money and might be able to find your buddy a job with another entity that loves to waste money.

Sorry man. But a lot of people like him had jobs because of overly bloated government full of lazy assholes, that over hired and created more jobs, so they wouldn't have to work hard like they would in private business.
So tell us, what was his paper pushing job in agriculture?

Gov't doesn't produce anything. It only consumes...

Tit of government is our dollars. While some employees are necessary the overall bulk of them are but leeches and bettering the use of taxpayer dollars is needed. There is a big reason people work in government and generally isn’t a good thing for taxpayers

Civil engineer for NRCS
Ah. Well I’m sorry he may have lost his job. Civil engineer should be back on his feet in no time though, if needed

Was he furloughed due to the Schumer Shutdown or actually laid off?
If he's furloughed, he'll be made whole once it's finished. I lived through several of these during my time in the military and as a civil servant.

A.I. will eliminate a lot of programming jobs in the next 5 years. So he needs to learn how to fix a toilet or AC unit.

I dont think there is a lot of cheering for individuals losing their jobs, but there's a general vibe that federal workers are immune to layoffs because once government makes a position its rarely ever evaluated if it is necessary or not. Us private sector folks go through thay routinely. And those positions are funded out of my paycheck and 90% of my tax funds dont benefit me in any way. Truly sorry for your friend, but welcome to the real world.
This.

We are currently hiring anyone with a technical degree because we can’t get enough engineers. I realize each market is different but there are opportunities to be had.

No lie there. My son's best friend and best friend's father work for SRP...They make bank...My son's best friend, 20 years old, just started as an apprentice lineman and makes 65 an hour. I think there is some DEI, and nepotism going on their. They are Native American. The national average for Lineman is like 100 to 120,000 a year. The kids making way way more than that.

Do people on here not realize that most federal workers are just regular everyday people?
Truly, I feel for your friend as I know that can’t be easy. But this is bigger than him.
ETA: raise

They're not owed a fake job that doesnt help Americans at a salary that has nothing to do with their real value.

When I was in grad school, I did a summer in DC at Georgetown as part of a “business and government policy” program. About 50 or so MBA students from around the country.
As part of this, we had a meeting with SecDef Cheney, around the time the military downsizing after PG1. One question he was asked: Did he feel bad about pushing out some military who had 15 years and were planning on getting their 20.
His answer: The military has a mission and a budget. It has to do one within the other. It’s not a job corps.
I may have my issues with Cheney, but I respected that answer.

Why do you keep referring to your friend in the past tense? Did he die? Did Trump steal his credentials and professional experience from him thus rendering him a FORMER civil engineer?
Your story reeks of manure.

Yes. I have cousins that are civilian employees on Air Force bases.
And they took those jobs to make a LOT of money, with the complete understanding that they may be laid off every time there's budget gridlock that results in a shutdown. They know the risks, and they set money aside accordingly.
