I don't even think it's about making it gay. It's about advertising it in such a way that makes people think they're mainly paying for the gay kiss, and a minor side story is in there somewhere. If a frickin kiss is the only thing they can hype up, it's gonna lead people to believe they story is gonna fricking suck.

1) The marketing was not your typical Disney marketing. I (who admittedly pays a lot of attention to Disney stuff) did not even know about this until I saw some ads in Disney World at the end of May. Usually there is months of promos, toy sales, etc.
2) They replaced Tim Allen
3) They went against Top Gun
4) Related to number 1... there was no info about what this plot was. Is it a sequel? A prequel? A retelling from Buzz's point of view? The only thing we heard about it was a lesbian kiss scene... and that only came out in the last week.
It was like DIsney mailed it in with this one.
