Colombia just elected a Marxist ex-terrorist as President

What's crazy is that despite having Venezuela right next door as an example, they basically elected their own Hugo Chavez today.
Colombia has always been one of the more conservative, anti-communist South American countries.
The guy was formerly a leader of a Marxist terrorist organization that raped, murdered, and kidnapped a wave of terror throughout Colombia for decades.
And then they turn around and elect that guy President (at least according to whoever is counting the votes).

Agreed. I have no idea what sort of system they have down there but modern technology has not made elections more secure as it should have, instead it's just made them easier to rig.

M-19 was the group this guy was a member of. They kidnapped the sister of the Ochoa Brothers, partners of Pablo Escobar. You can imagine what happened to those responsible for that. One of their later leaders was then assassinated on the orders of Carlos Castano, who was a former member of the Medellin Cartel and the founder of the AUC, a right-wing paramilitary group who fought the communist guerrillas.

There's a reason that Simon Bolivar said that democracy really wasn't a fit for Central and South American peoples, and that they had to be ruled by a strong hand. It's one of the reasons I'm adamantly against Puerto Rico becoming a state. It's basically another Spanish-language third world country with American financial subsidies and the thinnest of Constitutional veneers.
