According to media in Japan, Automotive News reports, BYD has plans for a new EV factory in Mexico in the hopes of exporting the cheap cars to the U.S. for sale without having to be hit with U.S. tariffs placed on China.

In Mexico, auto workers often earn $3 to $3.25 an hour. Taking advantage of the low wages in Mexico, BYD is looking to build cheaply made EVs that can very competitively compete against EVs made in the U.S. by Tesla, General Motors (GM), and Ford.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned lawmakers that if the U.S. does not put hefty tariffs on foreign-made cars, the American auto industry will be decimated:

Again?

At this point, let Chrysler / Fiat / whatever the frick go broke and sell off their brands with any value, like Jeep, to another company.

Ford and Chevy, OTOH, need to make shite people will buy and not EV shitboxes.

The last things we need is for our car industry to fail.

It has a ripple effect that reaches into businesses that depend on them to military readiness.

Personally, I think it's decades past time that we stop the globalism that ruins the USA.

Ah remember in the 2016 election cycle Trump told the automakers that if they offshored production he would put a tariff so high they'd never sell another car, and as a result all the production stayed stateside and people kept their jobs.

Then Biden got installed.

Not crazy about Chinese crap but I’m also not a fan of keeping the Big 3 in business solely because they are American companies.

Because the quality of tech products we are getting from China are SO fricking quality right now.

And then assembling them in Mexico.

They going to come across the border with the full Fentanyl trim package?

Needs to be Big 2. Chrysler hasn’t had any sustained success in years, as their last big innovations which took off were the minivan and the SUV (Jeep Cherokee) but they have been floundering since and typically having about 400 days sales worth of inventory on hand parked in places like the now defunct Silverdome.

Americans buy loads of Chinese garbage on Amazon, Temu, etc on a daily basis. Is it really that great of a leap of logic they would buy cheap, Chinese cars if they are 30% or so cheaper than others?

Biden will not allow any interference in China’s plans or additional tariffs.

He has been paid off to get out of the way and that is what he's doing.

My guess is that the people buying them would be the ones buying a Nissan Altima right now.

Americans have shown that they don't want EVs. The U.S. companies have stopped production due to huge unsold stockpiles. It doesn't matter what country is making them. The Chinese EVs will not sell here.

They will. And the company that is moving to China is owned in part by the CCP. The company is '"private".

Will the EV tax credits still exist by the time they come here?

If so, these things probably sell because they will find a way to cut costs to where they tell very stupid people it is “nearly free” after the tax credits.

Do not know. But I would not doubt it.

There are massive concerns on this. From spying, to establishing a direct line to move CCP over the border.

It's not all about ruining our capability to produce in war times (and there will always be war).

We have become our own enemy.

Kind of like Milo Minderbender arranging for the bombing of our own airstrip because it benefits the syndicate everyone here has their money invested into.

China makes a lot of shoddy products because they cut corners any chance they get.
