Didn't assume anything. I wondered. Life is full of it.

Wait till the January 2027 FBI recordings release on MLK... We'll see if the left is willing to cancel their saint.

Does this mean I can call 1st street in Austin 1st street again?

That would be great.

Not that I’ve ever called it anything but 1st street, but some younger folks around here look at me funny. “Cesar Chavez is 1st street kid”

After that we can perhaps work on 19th street. But I suspect dumping MLK might be a real fight.

The media was willing to let the abuse slide until videos surfaced of Cesar saying illegal immigration was bad because it reduced the salary and bargaining power of those already working in America.

Even worse. From wiki:

quote:

He launched the "Illegals Campaign" to identify illegal migrants so that they could be deported, appointing Liza Hirsch to oversee the campaign.[249][251] In Chavez's view, "if we can get the illegals out of California, we will win the strike overnight."[252] This was a reiteration of an early view he expressed concerning the problems the UFW boycott faced in 1972. Chavez believed that any strike undertaken by agricultural workers could be undermined by "wetbacks" and "illegal immigrants".[253] Huerta urged him not to refer to migrants who had come to the U.S. illegally as "illegals" but Chavez refused, stating: "a spade's a spade."[252]

Pretty sure "wetback" has the Mexican equivalent of the "N-word" for a long time now.

33 years? Robert E. Lee and Columbus say "hold our beers".

I'm happy for them to eat their own on this, but I have never agreed that removing statues or street names is "erasing history". Chavez still exists all over the place - textbooks, Wikipedia, etc.

The "erase history" people don't seem to mind at all that Lee Circle replaced Tivoli Circle. Names change.

I remember the Cesar Chavez days well.

He was no saint ... especially as they made him out to be.

He was very pro communist revolutionaries, had backer ties to Russian/Cuban orgs, and it's been known for decades that he liked underaged girls.

Just one notable transgender relationship would have stopped this cancellation effort.

Are you sure? I wouldn’t put it past our idiotic city council to name it after some black activist or something like “Planned Parenthood Drive.”

It's interesting that if his sin was to have killed someone, he would have been forgiven long ago, possibly even venerated as a victim of the system but getting on the wrong side of MeToo or immigration, now there is no coming back from that.

That’s a shame. I enjoyed watching him back in the day.
