The fouding fathers had set it up that way. A person had to won property to vote, in other words, they needed skin in the game.
Owning property is one thing, but I do believed that if you don't work, you don't vote.

This is oversimplified hyperbole.
The banks have a lien on the property and can take the property if you don't pay the mortgage as agreed. As long as you are paying the mortgage and it is current the bank can't force you to sell.
People would not jerk off to their home "equity" if they did not own the home like you state.
