Just outed yourself. Not a single one of you complained about tariffs under Biden.
I have no dog in this fight & vehicle market is getting out of hand.
But you are steadily on here engaging dissent by taking BS out of context & making the most ridiculous disingenuous arguments.
In this case, there may be a slight difference between tariffs on “Chinese automobiles” vs tariffs on “Earth”.
But you knew that & weren’t really trying to start a discussion.

I agree and I think a lot of people do, but none of the car makers have gotten the message.

Elon is rolling out fully autonomous cybercabs this year. No steering wheel or pedals. A lot of automakers are going to be significantly behind the curve and some won't recover.
Interesting listen by this tech analyst.
This tech analyst believes Musk is seeing a future where many people will opt to have autonomous vehicles that are mass produced but not necessarily owned by individuals. Musk believes he can get the price point down on fee usage for autonomous vehicles so affordable that many people will not own a vehicle or maybe they have just one vehicle that is available for personal use. Think of the rental scooters in most large Metropolitan area and then think of millions of autonomous vehicles that are available for fee usage. The interesting aspect is this, you could buy a few autonomous vehicles and be a part of a larger fee usage network.....things are going to be very interesting over the next 5-10 years if human civilization doesn't destroy itself.

If you really want to understand the problem, then read this article which details it:

BYD is, in essence, not a car per se’, but a mechanism to generate a carbon credit certificate that can be sold to other car companies.
It’s the carbon credit certificate that generates the revenue, not the sale of the vehicle. As my dinner guest explained, the auto insurance industry was having fits about this because the actuaries couldn’t accurately put a correct figure on the cost of the insurance warrantee within the industry (that’s another story).
The bottom line is that China is manufacturing a product to create a carbon credit certificate in response to the demand for carbon credits from all the world auto-makers. Any nation that has a penalty or fine attached to their climate goals is a customer. Those are nations with fines or quotas associated with the production of gasoline powered engines if the auto company doesn’t hit the legislated target for sales of electric vehicles.
RIn essence, EU/AU/CA/RU/ASEAN car companies buy Chinese car company carbon credits, to avoid the EU/AU/CA/RU/ASEAN fines. The Chinese then use the carbon credit revenue to subsidize even lower priced Chinese EVs to the EU/AU/CA/RU/ASEAN car markets, thereby undercutting the EU/AU/CA/RU/ASEAN car companies that also produce EVs.
Big Panda brilliantly exploits the ridiculous pontificating climate scam and has an interest in perpetuating -even emphasizing- the need for the EU/AU/RU/ASEAN countries to keep pushing their climate agenda. China even goes so far as to fund alarmism research about climate change because they are making money selling carbon credit certificates on the back end of the scam to the western fear mongers.
This is friggin’ brilliant.

Carbon credits and govt subsidies are a huge part of it, but BYD also owns most of the supply chain. That’s a big part of it too (cheap factory labor & very few middle men).

Who cares? Maybe stop building garbage that costs 70k and welcome to the free market economy, no bailouts f them.

Yes companies like BYD are vertically integrated and and can scale production as needed

Maybe, if they abandon the EV nonsense and focus on making great normal vehicles.
How’s Rivian doing?

I’d like to see them “adapt” by making affordable vehicles again. Sure, I can afford a nice, shiny, extremely over priced, brand new pick up truck. But who in the hell wants to pay the current price? I certainly don’t. It’s beyond ridiculous at this point.

The millions of people that work in the automotive industry?
If the automotive industry contracted employment down to 30% of current levels the economy at large would suffer for it

Yep, the day is coming where privately owned cars will become a luxury in most suburbs and cities.

buying an 80K truck and being able to afford to buy an 80k truck are 2 different things..

Great recommendation. I've subbed to that channel for a couple months. Optimus is going to be much the same. The general public has no idea what is coming.

And if making them more reliable cost them money, then just cut out all of the electronic gadgets except AC/Heat and a radio. I'll buy it.
Hell... it would save them money. An engine Chevrolet built back in 2006 or so is waaaay more reliable than the ones produced today. And the engines new to new.. side by side.. are vastly cheaper than this new DOD and water thin oil crap.

If the only jobs you can get are greeting shoppers and stapling TOS reports, you'll be stuck in city busses.
As I alluded to in my reply, the average factory job in the US pays around $17 an hour.
Don't take my word for it, look it up yourself.
Pretty much the same as greeting shoppers.
But hey, vehicle prices will be higher than ever before, so there's that benefit.

I feel like a reliable car or truck with decent horsepower but just bench cloth seats, manual windows, basic radio and AC/heat for 20k would sell big. No sensors, no fancy electronics. Just a vehicle to get you from A to B
Sounds like the SLATE truck but with an ICE instead of batteries
