Their livelihood is being threatened. Too bad many of them didn’t think about that when they voted.

This is not sustainable.
Private owned grocery store won't be able to compete and will close.
Then what will new yorkers be left with, bread lines ?

The bread lines will be easy pickings for the criminals looking to rob people.

Are people acting like this isn’t exactly how communists soft launch communism?
You put the state run subsidized stores and factories next to the privately owned outfits.
The private sector can’t compete because the market is rigged and go out of business.
The government says”oops, hate that for you…” and the state consolidates control of the market top to bottom.
Rinse and repeat, slow march through the economy until the communists collapse under the weight of their own failures when they run out of other people’s money and competency to leverage.

I have wondered about the legality of these stores. In my state, a government entity can’t legally compete with the private sector for most services. Exceptions include healthcare and education, but the state can’t open something like a tire store or an ice cream chain that directly competes with the private sector.
That may not be true in NY, but it would surprise me.

These government run stores have been attempted before in the US and then failed spectacularly. Almost hilariously. I don't see this being any different. Mamdami has never had any type of job in the private sector, or any other business model that functions in the supply-and-demand model. So the guy at the top has no clue there. He's also likely surrounded himself with scores of people who also have come from academia, political organizing, and other government-run positions. People who have essentially only gotten paid from the state. It's going to collapse and will be glorious to watch.
You can not use the state to inject itself into a capitalist system without everything getting all fricked up. There's going to be a lot of people in this thing that are going to feel betrayed.

Could be.
The the shelves might be constantly bare from Bodegas buying up all the inventory to re-sell.
