One of the reasons the East Wing was built was as cover (literally and figuratively) for the PEOC being built underground.
I can certainly see the PEOC getting upgrades, and potentially being the reason that the demolition was done. Maybe the initial plan was to build the ballroom with minimal impact on the existing East Wing structure but once the PEOC upgrade was included it all had to come down.

I guess they don't know that there is already a bunker and it is under the East Wing.

There's already a mile-deep bunker beneath the WH that, if you believe what whistle-blowing insiders have claimed, has underground passages and transport systems to various other locations. Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver International, Atlanta, Houston, among others. But even if the transport system and interconnected transit tunnels are BS, the bunker is very real and publicly disclosed.
Libs that think shite like this are stupid. Not ignorant, but actually stupid. Why would Trump hide from a tornado in a 55 gallon plastic drum when he has an in-ground storm cellar right there? But that's the equivalent of what these people expect us to believe.

I thought it was confirmed he went thru the proper channels.
If he wanted taxpayer money he goes thru Congress. Didn't need/want it so didn't need to go thru Congress.

He had a huge “offseason team” of super talented folks & then had several super heroes join the team during the election.
They had plans for all of this & drawings have been worked on for a while.
I don’t blame him for wanting to leave his mark on DC.
Especially with his background of Real Estate & Development.
And the fact that he saved us from Killary & Heels Up, there would be no USA left had Hillary taken over. People don’t realize how close we were to total demise, and we aren’t out of the woods just yet.
But he has earned some upgrades to DC and to accommodate his gatherings. I can imagine the first ball thrown, put a UFC match on the White House Lawn for grand opening.
Could charge $Tens of thousands for tickets easily, maybe $100k a pop with a huge lineup.
Then have some proceeds go to paying for the ballroom. Win/win
