My prediction is this will become the norm over the next 20 years, and I’m fine with that. Maybe they get your CC info up front, and then just have you add the tip at the end. It will cut some of the riff raff out of the restaurants too.

It’s becoming common to have to pay a deposit when you book a reservation at higher end places now - they do that to avoid people booking reservations and not showing up. But it would be a good way to prevent dine and dashing

I'm more than fine opening up a tab at a restaurant when ordering.
I mean at fast food places I pay before I get my food, grocery stores and doordash as well.
It would probably save me some money if the restaurant was able to avoid the theft.

Before anyone says it is just a snowbitd thing and not specifically Canadian, that isn't true. The snowbirds from the US have state groups down is GS/OBA that raise money over the winter to donate items to the library, fire department, zoo, etc.

It was a nightmare waiting on these Queans, always ordering appletinis they would drink over half of and send back. Run you to death, try yo get everything for free. I have witnessed two black servers fighting over not wanting to wait on them.
I had a woman adamant that her entire party should be comped because they put rice on her plate instead of french fries.

It’s a learned behavior. Even if the expectations are the exact same for everyone, their first reaction is to cry “racism” if they don’t like it. America has cow towed to that nonsense for long enough. People need to step up and call them on their bullshite without fear of repercussions for simply telling the truth.
