President Joe Biden on Tuesday will order his Department of Justice not to renew its contracts with private prisons, one of multiple new planks of Biden's broad-focused racial justice agenda.

The actions are aimed at combating discriminatory housing practices, reforming the prison system, respecting sovereignty of Tribal governments and fighting xenophobia against Asian Americans, especially in light of the Covid pandemic.

"For too many American families, systemic racism and inequality in our economy, laws and institutions, still put the American Dream far out of reach," Rice said at a press briefing.

So the owner of the prison is the reason Blacks are in prison at a "disproportional level" compared to other races?

can Joe tell us why who owns the building matters at all relative to who the DOJ locks up?

Has this always been referred to as such. Why not call it the Department of Justice. Seems like just lately theyve been referring to it this way

Im actually fine with this. Not a fan of private prisons. If the state is taking someone’s freedom away, the state should supervise imprisonment.

The reason we contract with private prisons is because it saves money.

A private company concerned about profit margins will be much more cost-effective and cost conscious than a govt run prison.

prepare for prison costs to go up

From a practical perspective (not that the imbeciles think about this) where are they going to put all of those criminals?! My guess is they're going to just let them all go.

As for the number of lost jobs.......

I agree with you in theory but where to does this jerk off derive his authority to kill businesses and jobs as he wills it?

I'm confused. For the last four years we heard the DOJ worked for the American people, not the president, so why is the Department of Justice now Joe Biden's?

That was how Obama referred to agencies: "my military" etc

Yeah I am not a fan of policing for profit either. This is one function the government should be responsible for.....

War on drugs and civil forfeiture show the govt being responsible doesn’t remove profit motive

I'm good with it. Private prisons are a bad idea and have led to finding bodies to put inside for profit. I have never liked it. Prisons are insanely important to a functioning society to keep those who do not function properly out of it. Making them for profit though is very USSR sounding to me personally.

I mean, I’m for this, but not for racial equity reasons.

There should be no profit incentive for imprisoning people.
