I think if we're going to make additional investments in education part of the goal needs to be getting more people to graduate high school

The high school drop out rate in some communities is embarrassing. It's not like the kids don't have the IQ for it

No child left behind just became a matter of lowering the bar entirely.

If you want them to graduate more people they'll just dumb down the curriculum even more.

Strange. Somehow we've managed to sustain the free K-12 system for nearly a century. Absorbing a 4-year college system can reasonable and achievable.

Free education doesn't hurt citizens; it hurts the bankers. What are you afraid of?

The only countries which offer free university sharply restrict attendance. It’s free, if you make the cut.

I paid for 2 college degrees. Doesnt seem fair to me.

How does free college close wealth and income gaps that democrats worry about so much?

More liberal college indoctrination. What could go wrong with that?

Rising tuition with government backed student loans and maybe this solves that but maybe we already have too many kids attending college now.

I'm not sure that's a terrible idea to be honest

Absolutely.

College will simply turn into the new high school, even more than it is now.

Standards will drop even further to accommodate these new students.

And these students will leave, if they graduate, with degree that means nothing economically, having missed four of their most productive years, economically.

Sure. Are professors prepared to take home 45k a year? If so, let’s do this thing.

Most only require a four year degree because so many people have a four year degree.

So do away with useless degrees. Feminine studies, art history, and sociology, recreational management, basically anything that D1 athletes major in are useless degrees that provide no useful training. Just do away with them.

If it's so valuable... why are people refusing to accept it?

Sanders has a lot of crazy ideas, but this isn't one of them. Our society improves as the population becomes healthier and more educated.

Going to school and having fun for a couple years before dropping out OR a degree in some useless shite doesn’t make a person educated. How about they push people that aren’t good at school into trade schools? Can’t order your plumbing, electrical work, etc. from amazon.

I've met many who went to college and have forgotten almost everything they learned, even stuff the should have known in grade school. They just took medication, crammed for tests, and got through but that's hardly an education.

Education is free. Why not rent?

Rent is free. Why not transportation?

Transportation is free. Why not healthcare?

Healthcare is free. Why not food?

Etc...

There shouldn't be. K-12 should be free market like college. Can't afford? Teach your kid at home or don't have one.

Agreed. Also, remove the education requirement placed on parents. Don’t want to send your kid to school? Don’t.

Devil's Advocate: why shouldn't education be free - especially since most white collar jobs require a 4-year degree? Is it just because you paid for higher 3ducation, so you think it's unfair that others may not?
Most of a college education is information learned. To that degree, it can and therefore should be free since information can flow freely without someone else’s service. As far as hands-on, tangible elements of a college education...that requires someone else’s service and therefore isn’t free.

Haven’t read the thread yet but i imagine someone is making the point that if college is free then a college education means nothing.

If that’s the case, then free college would be the best thing to happen to this country in years.
