What happens when a little person hides behind a big person when there is water spraying at them? Same thing here. That little building was protected.

Is it possible the ammonium nitrate self ignited with oxidizers near by in the warehouse? Possible. I say possible because a few years ago there was an 18 wheeler transporting ammonium nitrate through Arkansas and the 18 wheeler brakes's caught fire. The driver pulled over and tried to put out the fire to no avail. This is the aftermath:
This ammonium nitrate was NOT mixed with an oxidizer being transported. It is quite safe in its pure form.
However what likely happened as the melting ammonium nitrate (yes, it melts) from the brake fire came into contact with an oxidizer (melting plastic would work) it set off a chain reaction and the explosion ensued.
The same thing probably happened in this Beirut warehouse.

Looks like a typical ME shithole. Is that before or after the blast?

Question... where is the truck? Did it vaporize in the blast?

Too bad there weren't more liberals visiting Beirut yesterday, like all of them. What a pleasant day that would have made

Yea b/c it got shielded by the bigger buildings

There was nothing left of the truck. The driver actually saved a lot of lives by waiting until he could get out of town before pulling over.

In the U.S.A. if you got money, build it..... but get your permits and more money and all of your licensed contractors in order because you will be inspected before, during and after the build.

If there was 2750 metric tonnes of AN as is reported, depending on quantity of any existing newrby fuel source, that would put the yield between 1.3 and 2 Kilotons of TNT. For reference, Hiroshima was 15 Kilotons.

Hearing now that it wasn't ammonium nitrate in the secondary explosion, but rather a deliberate deflagration of Iranian HMX rocket fuel .... and performed with surgical precision I might add.
The ships adjacent to the blast site undamaged in the image .... this was likely munitions, IMO ....

But now there are conflicting reports including a report at Al-Hadeth that claims the massive explosion was a Hezbollah warehouse in Beirut for missiles from Iran.

@BeholdIsrael
Experts that examined the Beirut explosion footage concluded that it was rocket fuel that exploded. That confirms that it was part of Hezbollah weapon percision program where they turned dumb rockets into smart guided ones.

Look at the damage it did to this building.

Beirut was once the cosmopolitan jewel of the mediterranean, including a large Christian population (still there to some extent). The building codes are likely better than say, Cairo. Decades of conflict have taken a toll of course.
Completely unrelated.. The father of Stewart Copeland (of the band, Police) was an intelligence officer once stationed in Beirut. The embassy there had attained, he firmly believed, part of the dead sea scrolls. Apparently a gust of wind blew some of the ancient writs from the top of the embassy before transit. Lost to the desert wind.
In Sting's words.. "I always wonder what was on those ancient papers."

I’m assuming there were fireworks or munitions in that warehouse that caused the Nitrate to blow but what the hell set those off to begin with? Welders or stray cigarette? We might never know.
