Someone doesn’t know what inflation is.

It may cause a price increase, that remains to be seen. Inflation is only created by the money supply growing. Nothing else.

Is that final assembly, or inclusive of parts and components?
That definitely includes components but 100% of Tesla’s car components do not come from the US. Maybe all of their direct vendors are American? That’s theoretically possible I guess. The numbers are definitely indicative of what I’ve observed in the industry. Ford is absolutely the most domestic of the big 3. By far.

Not really how this works. There will be shortages of cars for a decent price, dealers will start marking up cars, after 2 years a chevy equinox will equivalently priced as a tariffed BMW 3 series.

What do you really need a dealer for anyway, a test drive? Ford has been working on a plan to sell direct to the public for a while. Dealerships will turn into service centers.

No it was the whole truth. There in fact was 100k jobs created. That is not counting the support jobs that supported the transportation of materials, the businesses that provided for the additional workers whether it be goods or services. When you talk about additional employees it is 1.5 to 1. The support whether it be a 7/11 or a Pizza Hut or an accountant to do taxes. 100k actually means 150k or more.

Dealerships make the bulk of their profit from service anyway. New cars are like net zero or close to it. They just want to pump out as many units as they can and build a service customer base.

Domestically produced BMW, Toyoda, Nissan and Mercedes can avoid these tariffs.

Do you think they are going to charge different prices for their vehicles that are made in the US? It’s going to raise all prices across the board and then they will stay that way even if the tariffs are removed

They are competing not only against the imported cars but also the other cars domestically produced. So no, they will not raise prices all across the board.

Cars will be less affordable.

When the lumber and building materials tariffs go into effect, houses will be less affordable.

So MAGA just wants economic suffering? I don’t recall this from the campaign.

I'm willing to short term suffer for the USA to have a better position going into the future. The world will suffer some pain but there will be a level playing field soon. They will stop screwing us bc our president is America first. About time we put this in action.

We had something similar to this in the 80's when Reagan put import quotas on Japanese cars. It did raise prices on average on all cars.

"Damningly, the VER policy’s implicit tax fell disproportionately upon the most cost-conscious car buyers. Japanese carmakers had found such success in America in the 1970s and early 1980s because they offered affordable vehicles with good fuel economy, while Detroit continued to churn out inefficient land yachts. In 1980, the year before VER was established, the average Japanese car was sold in the U.S. for $6,585, while the average domestic car was sold for $7,758.

The cost-conscious car buyers interested in Japanese cars and the savings they offered—and the even more cost-conscious buyers on the used market as the effects of the policy filtered down—were precisely the Americans who paid for Detroit’s “breathing room.” By 1986, the fifth full year under VER, the cost of a Japanese car had risen to $8,229 and that of a domestic car to $9,223. The additional cost for new cars took money that Americans could have invested or spent elsewhere in the economy in the absence of VER. The total effect of the policy, Berry estimated, was a net national welfare loss of close to $3 billion."

Excellent point. Companies will never adjust. Consumers will never adjust. Nope, everything just continues as usual except we're paying higher prices. It doesn't increase domestic production. And as cars are staples with limited options, you have to take what you can get. We don't have 100 car options to choose from. We don't have the option to spend less. The only thing that can possibly happen is higher prices. It's literally the only thing that ever changes from a tariff.

Why does one office have so much unilateral power? Supporters are lauding this now, but this can easily swing the other way.

Let’s say a Democrat like Gavin Newsome is elected. He unilaterally places a tariff on imported crude oil in the name of green energy. The U.S. gets roughly 1/3 of its oil from imported crude. That would wreak havoc.

Trump’s policies are only reversing lowered inflation and are going to send us into a recession. And for what?
