I'm a non-believer and I have never once felt threatened. The overwhelming majority of my friends and colleagues are either christian, jewish or hindu and it's never been an issue. If asked I'll tell someone what I believe but it rarely comes up and the ones who know I'm not religious don't care much. The most I've ever gotten is encouragement to go to church, read the Bible or pray about it which actually shows they care about me. I even go to church from time to time with my family (almost all Christian) and it doesn't bother me at all.
On a large scale, such as a political office, yes being open about your atheism will get you ostracized due to the ingrained belief within society that atheists are inherently immoral and untrustworthy. On the level of individuals though it rarely even comes up much less becomes an issue. Outside of hardcore fundies, most Christians have no issue with befriending non-believers as long as you aren't a dick about it.
