‘It’s insulting. It’s sacrilege’: Asian Americans react to possible federal ban on gas stoves due to health risks and emissions

How wok cooking — the method behind dishes from kung pao chicken to pad see ew — and Asian communities in the U.S. fit into the debate over gas stoves

When Charlene Luo was looking for a condo to buy in 2021, she had two nonnegotiable requirements: one, enough space to host friends for dinner; and two, a gas stove with the capacity to install a powerful range hood.

Luo, a data scientist, cooks every day and hosts a supper club from time to time in her Brooklyn apartment. She prefers a gas stove because she cooks with a wok, the deep, sloping pan that is the best vessel for preparing Sichuan dishes.

-------------------------------------
But after a consumer-safety official in early January floated the possibility of a federal ban on gas stoves, Yam started wondering how she would cook at home if her landlord were to replace the gas stove in her apartment with something else. Would she still be able to get the level of heat and control needed to cook with a wok?

California has already passed a law banning the installation of gas stoves in new construction, and New York City has a similar prohibition that will take effect in 2024. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is reviewing gas stoves, citing studies about the health risks and effects on global warming caused by their emissions. “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned,” commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said in an interview with Bloomberg.
------------------------------
He feels strongly about being compelled to make such a change. “I’m not against electrification of most of it. But I think to legislate it all out is doing great cultural damage,” Chen says. “It’s insulting. It’s sacrilege.”

Liberals are ok with this. Asians aren't a minority of importance in their view unless they can use it to push an agenda. Like college admissions, this is an area where Asians might as well be white.

Liberals hate Asians, so this makes sense.

See:

This idea is monumentally stupid and is a sublime example of what liberals inside the thick DC bubble convince themselves is politically prudent.

First off, NG burns clean AF. The electricity required to power an electric range will lead to more coal burning. The standard breaker requirement for an electric range is 50 AMPS! That's enough to power a large RV with washer/dryer.

Second, power outages particularly in freezing temps take away an important and potentially lifesaving secondary usage for gas ranges-- space and water heating.

Lastly, it cooks like sh*t. No one who earns a living by preparing food chooses electric over gas.

They'll still vote democrat. Assuming they make it to another election. I'm guessing damn near 100% of them are jabbed. Liberals love gas stoves though, so no fear, they're not going anywhere.

People will forget how good things used to be and you’ll be chastised for saying the old way was better.

There are still shortages or outages of items in grocery stores. If you complain, you’ll be criticized for not being satisfied with having to buy a different brand or variety than what you prefer.

Guilty Leftists think being the Land of Plenty is shameful and they will impose their beliefs on you through coercion.

I believe they confiscated the gas stoves early in the Chinese revolution.

If they ban propane, I'm going with a quality cow fart fired standing wok. How many cows would I need and what breeds produce the highest BTU value?

You could just mandate that HVAC systems include mandatory exhaust with fresh air makeup, and that gas stoves include a mandatory hood exhausted to the outside that is interlocked with the stove such that it automatically ventilates when the stove turns on.

Then, you wouldn't just help those little kids whose asthma is aggravated by gas stoves, you would help everyone who suffers some bad effect from indoor air pollution, but, this being the government, they'd much rather just ban things...

The goal is to increase demand for electricity to the point that it can't be supplied. And then the rolling blackouts will become something that grandpa tells his grand children about a time when the only time the electricity went out was when a hurricane of something similar happened. That is their goal.

WE already have building codes for HVAC. They are controlled largely at the local level. "Mandate" is a strong word. "Code Revisions" would be better.

Everything got revised after Katrina (voluntarily, to the best of my knowledge) for wind loading and water incursion, and I don't recall it being a huge regulatory burden.

You can never get away from cooking with gas. There are plenty of ways to use gas and fire to make metal hot.
