I was born ten years after Apollo 11 but I've always had a big interest in spaceflight history. I've been waiting for another lunar mission my whole life. I, for one, am excited about it. I just hope everything checks out during the day and we actually launch this evening.

It has a diverse crew

Oh thank God! That will certainly be the only reason for mission success. Diversity is our strength!!! Just look at how wonderful that’s working out in all aspects of life. :Eye roll emoji

Very exciting time. Will the launch be before Orange’s speech this evening?

Yes. The speech is supposed to be at 9 PM EST and the launch window is 6:24 to 8:24 PM EST. Even if the launch is at the end of the window, I will have enough time to get home before the speech.

Biggest issue is clouds. It's cloudy now, but it's supposed to clear off later this afternoon. If I can get some good pics, I'll post them. I'm about 10 minutes from the beach in Vero Beach and about 15 minutes from the beach at Wabasso. We're planning on going to Wabasso because it's a little further north and will probably be a little less crowded. The pics won't be amazing, because we're about 70 miles south of Cape Canaveral. But we'll get a pretty nice view, nonetheless, if the clouds stay away.

It's kind of depressing that 56 yrs after we landed on the moon we are still getting there the same way with a very similar launch system, being multi-stage platform.

We use multistage rockets because of physics, not lack of innovation. Under the hood willing to bet modern rockets are a lot different than whatever we had 50 years ago.

why are we sending people to go around the moon like we haven't done this before?

All the original data was lost.

I have the same questions. If it’s just a drive-by, shouldn’t that be an unmanned vehicle?

They did an unmanned pass a few years ago. This was done in a similar fashion in the 60's. They build upon each stage of the process/mission. Supposedly, for future lunar missions that will be a refueling module orbiting to refuel the lunar module

100% agree. It's physics and getting essentially the same amount of mass to orbital velocity. Our engines and fuel can't pack enough punch to reduce the fuel weight. Just so much energy can be had out of the fuel. The only real diff in this versus Saturn V is that there are solid boosters on this one.

Too bad it has been obsolete since SpaceX started landing and reusing rockets. After that, it became an absurdly expensive jobs program.

This conversation with "I believe" "I think" etc is not very reassuring.

Who trained these people? Geesh. Prayers for the brave astronauts.

The conversation just now at the 10 minute hold is terrifying. WTH?

They sound like amateurs. I wish SpaceX was doing the launch and not NASA.
