Exactly. He insisted he was innocent, so that made him guilty. Even though he was innocent.
Kind of like saying he didn’t rape a woman who took her whole story from a tv show, a civil case jury agreed there was no rape but said he had to pay her because by saying he was innocent it defamed her.

Trump wasn’t a target of the investigation(s) existing at the time. And he was never investigated for Conspiracy against the US. He was investigated for obstruction of Justice after he started behaving like a dumbass.

My thinking is along the same lines. The media handled this whole event (that Trump must have somehow cheated because he beat their predictions) as being so self-evident that they didn't need to do any research into the "proof" being provided to them (which was all hearsay). To buttress that, the FBI was doing the same thing (and, at times, the source of the hearsay). That self-evidentiary portrayal was pushed out onto the masses in an effort which would have made Joseph Goebbels proud. They were taught that they should hate Trump because he cheated the system by colluding with Russia to sway the election and now that same media is doing its best to avoid owning up to it.
Many on the Left will continue to believe it (or at least hold ire against Trump as if it were true) simply because it dovetails into their political philosophy (that of "other side EVIL!" which is the philosophy of many on both sides of the aisle). Expect a lot of "yeah, but..." responses in conversations with liberals/progressives if this comes up.
