Vietnam still has political prisoners incarcerated. Any old white man living there would be under complete and constant Government surveillance. Everything coming out of your mouth and every word you type will be seen by The Government. The Government will recruit informers from among everyone around you, including your friends and family members, maybe even your wife.

I know that Leftist USA wants this for us and are working on this, but, in Vietnam, it is reality right now.

But, I guess that one could still live well there.

Malaysia is ok in KL but the rest of the country sucks in terms of medical and general living conditions.

I dated a doctor from Malaysia. She said Malaysia would be great if they could get rid of the Malay Muslims. The Chinese and Indian Malaysians are educated and work hard. The Muslim native Malays are lazy and stupid but they run the country due to majority voting numbers.

Gotcha.

My dad was Airborne 173rd.

Passed away from lung cancer 8 years ago. I always miss his Vietnam stories. Always learned something new.

Vietnam is nice, actually friendly to Americans, has good food, decent healthcare and is a good hub for exploring Asia.

Evidently.... You can arrange a wedding there. I know a guy who works there most of the year and I know another person non related to the first that is a teacher there....

Both paid to be married.

I served in Kilo 3/9 in 1969 as an 0311. Mostly in and around LZ Stud, Rockpile, Signal Hill, Caloo, Khe Sanh (wounded by ChiCom in June 50 years ago).

Everyday in the Nam was like an August noonday in La. A miserable place in spring and summer ... and then the monsoons in fall and winter.

Returned in 2004 and even found an old fighting hole. Place is gorgeous now but still uncomfortable and without basics such as a/c and ice. Pretty girls but they don’t age well at all. Turn into mama-sans by age 35. And the frickin bugs are still there.

Semper Fi!

My brother retired from oil business in his early 50s retired and stayed in Bangkok which is were he spent most his professional life.
Cost effective and life in a big city that never sleeps. A lot of expats living in Bangkok go to Vietnam for a slower holiday. Dirt cheep for food and partying. Lots of expats stay there.
They like people from out of country ( except Chinese and Japanese who tend to be rude) and is is a beautiful place and becoming a retirement destination to many.

After all, why would I want to go back to a country were I lost some of the greatest guys you would ever want to be around?

I certainly wouldn't ever want to live there!

As a fellow veteran (a shite ton younger though, my brother), I do not want to invalidate your feelings on this, but I also want you to recognize how irrational this is. We lost a lot of fantastic young men in France, too.

For that matter, we lost a lot of fine young men in Virginia and Pennsylvania even further back.

It may not be for you for a whole host of reasons, but losing guys there shouldn't be one of them.

Semper fi Marine. 3/3 here .... We must have rubbed elbows back then. There 05/68-06/69. Hope you recovered from your injuries. Memories still linger. It was a bad time to be there.

To all of our Vietnam vets, welcome home gents. You paved the way for us younger vets to be treated far better than you guys. Thank you.

Maybe you're right, however memories are still there. I probably remember more than I should from that time. I'm sure many vets were not real keen on returning to France after D-Day.

Dude. Go to the central portion of the country. Hard pass bro. At one point in our trip if something happened, I realized I was likely going to be dead because there were no healthcare resources. They had chickens running in and out of their houses.

I will never go back. Regardless of how tempting the beaches are. And they’re supposed to be the most stable and advanced LA country.

Wait...are you under the mistaken impression that I hung out inside my gated neighborhood the entire time?

We fished our asses off half a hundy miles into the Pacific. We drove up into the mountains an hour back in from the coast and hiked up into the mountains and rafted our way back down through Class 4’s per our guide. We ate lunch at a Barry Seal tribute plane lodged in the side of a mountain with a bar built in it. We visited off grid beaches that had 3 people-and one raccoon-on it the entire time we were there.

Yes, we saw chickens and other animals all over the damn place.

That’s because it’s-literally-a third world country. Saying it’s the most advanced country in Latin America is truthful. What’s also truthful is that there are nothing but 3rd world countries in Latin America.

IE-Being the most advanced 3rd world country in Latin America is like being a Gold Medal Winner in competitive eating. Even if you win you’re still a fricking loser.

The point of my comment was that if I had to choose a country other than los Estados Unidos to live in, I would choose CR over countries in SE Asia. The point was never to express the superiority or even attempt a comparison contrast of one’s health system to another.

My preference is CR based on cost of living, proximity to Norte Americano medicine and a fairly significant expat population. Oh...and not having a massive segment of society that hates me for being an infidel based on their religious beliefs is a plus.

Tagaytay south of Manila is really nice, too... wife wants to get a condo there in the next few years. Nice ones for under $100k, lots of celebs/wealthy Filipinos have places there so the restaurant and entertainment scene is top notch without the downside of Manila, and it's about an hour drive away if you need to go to the city for some reason.

My guess is that all those decades of 'Retire Cheap in Latin America' may not be going so well these days. Thoughts?

There are wonderful places to retire in Latin America. That’s where we are likely headed when we retire. Cities in Columbia, panama, Ecuador, Uruguay, etc. especially the latter. Beautiful country, safe, coastal etc..
