There's another aspect in which having female pilots can backfire.

The "Bitching Betty" audio warning system for pilots - that is, the computerized voice warnings for serious situations - i.e., "Ground Proximity, Pull up!" - are deliberately designed with a female voice - the reason being that virtually all voices a fighter pilot would hear over the radio in combat would be male, and so for especially dire situations, a female voice would stand out clearly amidst the others.

Now if you have many female fighter pilots in the force, now you have a lot of female voices cluttering up the radio and it gets hard to hear Bitchin Betty the computer warning system.

I was once told to speak about what you know and not just about what you believe or think.

In the USMC in Vietnam I saw some real men struggle all day in the heat, rain and up mountainsides with 75+ pounds on their back and then asked to stop, dig in, stay up half the night and prepare to fight.

There are always exceptions, but I know that very few women could withstand such physical punishment and endure it daily. Add to that the emotions involved in combat and reaction to seeing your friends blown away.

Also know that there are some crazy, horny guys on the battlefield — on both sides of the lines. Think about nighttime outposts.

The real test, however, is when Americans start to see 19-year-old girls’ body parts coming home in bags.

By no means do I mean to single out the AF as political correctness has corrupted all branches. I served in the Marine Corps in the Reagan-Bush (pre-Desert Storm) era and even then, pc culture was beginning to take root.

I graduated from Parris Island in April ‘86 and based on my personal experience as an enlisted Marine, enlisted female Marines were as a rule physically unfit for service. The rare exceptions proved the rule.

The reason is fundamental: the physical fitness standards for females were drastically easier than their male counterparts. And men’s physical fitness standards were ridiculously easy to begin with.

There were 3 passing classifications for the USMC’s PFT: 1st class, 2nd class and 3rd class. These classifications were determined by a baseline score that was acquired from minimum standards and a composite score awarded after completing a 3 mile timed run, attempting 80 sit-ups and 20 pull-ups.

The male running standards for any male under the age of 30 was to be able to compete a 3 mile run in under 27:00 minutes. Woman by contrast were granted 36:00 minutes (12 minutes a mile) to complete the run.

After age 30, the standards were pro-rated by decade, maxing out at age 55 with a minimum time of 33:00 minutes (11:00 minutes a mile.) The main reason for the age disparity is the younger the Marine, the more likely he is to be at the pointed tip of the spear.

I never was a gazelle and the best time I ever ran on the 3 mile PFT was about 19.5 minutes (about a 6.5 minute +/- mile.) Yet I easily pumped out a 1st Class PFT for every annual I ever completed.

And any reasonably fit high-school athlete (male or female) should have been able to at least squeeze out a 3rd class (male-standard) PFT. Indeed, I am now over 50 years old and I could still pump out a 3rd class PFT based on those old PFT standards.

These standards may have been tweaked slightly over the years but to the best of my knowledge, the USMC PFT remained relatively unchanged until the Pentagon required a single (and less rigorous) gender normed “Combat Readiness” test a few years ago. Anyone who is honest knows the reason HQMC revised it’s physical fitness requirements.
