Tens of thousands of Americans die from the flu each year

Why is this worthy of any more worry than that?

Hopefully it will be contained quickly.

But, the reason for the coverage is that it’s so contagious and some reports of 75-80% mortality rates.

They shut schools down over there for two weeks minimum and most businesses and public transportation are shuttered.

China, of all countries, isn’t going to that extreme unless it’s serious.

Because the impeachment hearings are generating zero viewers and readers and advertisers are raising hell.

They have been selling their meat like the picture in the OP for a long time, I imagine without problems...

I remember reading their pigs were tainted.

The sad thing is no one can really believe the Chinese govt. Trust in media is pivotal and we aren't far behind regarding media trust. It is sad all around.

I’d like to see those reports.
My calculations have it at like 3% tops.

Is there actually a question if China would lie to the world?

Yeah, 3% is what most "reporting" is but we are only a week into it and are having to trust a communist regime to give those numbers.

Well have to see what the western numbers on people infected report to get anything close to accurate.

Nope. Not even close.

The worst flu epidemic the world has ever recorded was in 1918 and the mortality rate was between 10% and 20%. And that was before medicene was developed to lessen the flu’s effects.

I believe the CDC does not track adult deaths from flu. They DO track adult deaths from pneumonia, though.

Can we get Lebron to explain really what is happening over there? I’m sure since he is an expert in Chinese politics and human rights, this whole pandemic thing should be nothing more than an easy layup for him to weigh in on with authority.

It’s a novel virus that the human immune system is being exposed to for the first time. Little to no cross immunity means just about everyone who is exposed will become infected, will shed the virus longer and subsequently expose more people to it. The increased transmission plus decreased immunogenicity (which leads to longer periods of illness which increases the chances of complications) is what makes this so dangerous.

Left unchecked, it’s estimated this virus would infect a third to half the human population with 6 months. That’s 2.5 to 4 billion people with a mortality rate between 3 and 15% depending on how much you believe the Chinese vs on the ground leaks. You do the math.

That’s exactly the number I came up with this morning.

This is a nothingburger until it crosses 10-15% mortality.

And id like to see the numbers for the regular flu, and other plagues in history for perspective

And that was because that flu pandemic did the opposite of what most flus do.

It killed the healthy and young adult males with strong immune systems and not the usual, elderly and babies.

That flu strain apparently used your immune system against you.

"The pandemic mostly killed young adults. In 1918–1919, 99% of pandemic influenza deaths in the U.S. occurred in people under 65, and nearly half in young adults 20 to 40 years old."

Depends on how widely disseminated the virus becomes.

Nobody infected on the dark continent

Would be crazy if all that is left after some huge pandemic are remote villages of Africans

This article disputes your statements about the coronavirus being new. It says the coronavirus was first identified in 1960 and almost every flu is a coronavirus variation. Even the common cold is a coronavirus.
