"Five years ago, could you have believed that half of Americans would agree we need a single-payer healthcare system?"

That's how Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)—a longtime advocate of guaranteeing healthcare for all Americans—responded to a new poll that found that 74 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of all adults surveyed support implementing a single-payer healthcare system in the United States.

"When people see the justice of an idea, it spreads like wildfire," Sanders tweeted Thursday morning. "The American people know that healthcare should be a right."

The Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) poll asked: "Do you support or oppose having a national health plan—or a single-payer plan—in which all Americans would get their insurance from a single government plan?" More than half said they support it:

The results align with other polls conducted within the past year. In September, as Common Dreams reported, 49 percent of all voters and two-thirds of Democrats surveyed by Politico/Morning Consult said they supported "a single-payer healthcare system." A KFF poll from July found that 53 percent of Americans somewhat or strongly favor a single-payer plan.

Support would plummet once people found out the details of the plan.

Why did hillarycare fail?

85% of Americans are fine with their personal health care situation. Wait till you tell them a government plan might not offer same level of coverage.

You think they'd support it then?

I'd love for you to explain to me the politically feasibility of this.

It would require the largest increase in taxes in the history of the country. Good luck selling that.

If I survey a poll whose question demonstrates all the benefits with none of the costs people generally approve.

Details at 8pm.

People love the idea. Will hate the results. My neighbor is a liberal from Vermont. He sells every other week in the Carribean. He is always telling me that healthcare is a right and everyone in the US should have it like Carribean nations. At the same time, he tells me that his biggest fear is getting sick while he is in the Caribbean.

So the idea spreads like wildfire? What is the actual plan to do this? Is it the VA system? Good luck!

Developers of medicinal techniques and products in the medical field could still be free market. Are you just assuming every brand or company that makes hypodermic needles or MRI machines would suddenly become part of the government?

The private industry has failed us on this issue. Life and death plus profit motive is clearly a poor match for any thinking person.

Come on dude. Single payer would be diretly affecting the vast majority of their funding source: insurance payments.

The one bright spot in American health care is our unparalleled rate of medical innovation.

Well, of course, in a utopia. All dreams could still be.

You people really love politicians. I mean, it's a religious kind of belief in them.

What's even funnier/creepier, is that we've heard for years how evil Republicans are and want families to die....yet they want that same Republican party having a say in how the entire healthcare industry is run.
