Thank you very little M/TV Board.

Hate to start another thread on this movie, but I gotta set the record straight.

<POTENTIAL SPOILERS (if you have never seen a chick flick, that is)>

I have been seeing reports on here of how this is a really funny movie, that this movie is funnier than the Hangover 2, and that this movie is NOT a chick flick, etc.

Let me tell you what. This movie is in fact a chick flick. It is Bride Wars unrated, grossed out edition. Obvious love interest angle, check. Caty girl fighting with ultimate make-up and friendship, check.

Also, this movie has some of the Judd Apatow Funny People/dramedy symptoms. At least 35 minutes too long, check. Tries to get serious beyond the scope of a funny movie, check. More than enough dragging parts with no laughs, check. At least Kristen Wigg didn't end up with a life threating disease.

Lastly, no, I am not mad, and Judd did not slepp with my GF. So, save the Umads and did Judd sleep with your GF business. THIS MOVIE HAD SOME LAUGHS. It definitely had some funny parts. I am NOT upset that I spent $5 to see it. Slightly, preturb by spending over 2 hours to watch it. BUT, the point is, I feel the M/TV board has really promoted this movie as something it is not. Let's be honest, this movie is really about Wiig's crap spiral and ultimate (maybe) happy ending.

Nope, I think I've got it down...

quote:

Chick flick is a slang term, often used pejoratively, for a film mainly dealing with female characters and designed to appeal to a female target audience.[1][2] Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (although not necessarily romantic as many other themes may be present).

quote:

Some frequent elements of chick flicks include having a female protagonist,[4] thematic use of the color pink (along with metaphorical allusions of the color),[5] and romance and/or dating based storylines.[3] Longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer has remarked about the plots as "How do you cope with money and love?"[6]

Moreover, to align with wiki, clearly targeted at chicks and had emotional parts. Again, this movie had funny rude/ gross parts that might trick you into thinking it is not just a chick flick. But rest assured, this film had all the ingredients.

Just don't go see this movie thinking it is a Hangover, Hot Tub Time Machine, NOT a chick flick-esque comedy.

I think the board did hype this movie up, I didn't even make it past the 1st 30 minutes. It was full of awkward chick moments that I didn't understand or find funny. Snuck into the theatre right next to it showing Limitless.

I can deal.... I can so deal. Mainly, because I haven't seen the Hangover 2. And... AND!, at least someone is willing to admit it was in fact a chick flick.

Look, I didn't hate the movie; in fact, I mostly, liked it.... mostly. But, it is being misrepresented on this board (and elsewhere for that matter). This movie is a raunchy chick flick. Had some funnies, but definitely, dragged on at times... not to mention the traditional chick flick obvious relationship angle.

I might could argue that it is. Is Dan in Real Life a chick flick? Does 40 year old virgin fit this...

I've seen that movie before, but not enough/ recently to recall its plot lines thoroughly. but, I know it wasn't "a film mainly dealing with female characters", I'd guess it wasn't "designed to appeal to a female target audience", I'm pretty sure it did not "have a female protagonist". but again, I could argue that it was on the chick flick side of movies, perhaps the guy equivalent of a chick flick. A guy movie that also targeted chicks.

Honestly, it is not in my comedy top whatever. I recall it having its funny moments, but along the guy chick flick area, I'd say Knocked Up kicks 40 year old's arse.

Yikes.

And just about every single movie in existence has some sort of "relationship angle." Bridesmaids isn't Hangover, but it's a similar kind of comedy...raunchy, in-your-face nastiness. Sure, there are mainly women in it, and it revolves around a wedding, and the main character gets in a (gasp!!) relationship. But it certainly isn't what most would regard as a "chick flick," at least not in the classic sense of the term. All in all, it is 100% aimed at women though, which is something you should've been able to figure out before walking into the theater.

This is sort of my take on things. I think getting your panties in a wad over whether Bridesmaids is a "chick flick" says more about the reviewer than the film. If a movie is good, it doesn't matter if its a chick flick. How dare Hollywood make movies which will appeal more to 50% of the world's population?

I'll never get people flipping out over a movie that focuses on women. Sex and the City was an abomination not because it focused on women but because it sucked.

Bridesmaids is a comedy (which I haven't seen yet). It should be judged pretty much solely on one criteria: did you laugh? Whether it had female themes or relationship stuff is irrelevent, really.
