This is sort of my take on things. I think getting your panties in a wad over whether Bridesmaids is a "chick flick" says more about the reviewer than the film. If a movie is good, it doesn't matter if its a chick flick. How dare Hollywood make movies which will appeal more to 50% of the world's population?

As they should. I just think the board was misrepresenting the movie.

quote:

Bridesmaids is a comedy (which I haven't seen yet). It should be judged pretty much solely on one criteria: did you laugh? Whether it had female themes or relationship stuff is irrelevent, really.

It had some laughs, but I still stand by the fact that it was about 30 minutes too long and dragged at points. Even my wife was ready for it to be over.

What does it matter if a movie is a chick flick? Are you that insecure?

Yikes

I blame Steve Carrell. Sometimes I really like him, other times, I am just meh. I've said it before, comedy is really subjective. At the risk of a hijack: See the Hangover v. HTTM debate.

quote:

And just about every single movie in existence has some sort of "relationship angle." Bridesmaids isn't Hangover, but it's a similar kind of comedy...raunchy, in-your-face nastiness. Sure, there are mainly women in it, and it revolves around a wedding, and the main character gets in a (gasp!!) relationship.

It's not the relationship itself, it is the campy-ness of the relationship. The smack you in the face obvious relationship. I don't know, maybe that is in a lot of movies.

quote:

All in all, it is 100% aimed at women though, which is something you should've been able to figure out before walking into the theater.

Yeah, I just wanted to believe. Lastly...

quote:

THIS MOVIE HAD SOME LAUGHS. It definitely had some funny parts. I am NOT upset that I spent $5 to see it. Slightly, preturb by spending over 2 hours to watch it.

I enjoyed the movie and was glad to have seen it. But, as with all films, it has its flaws.

At least one? I don't know, is this a trick question?

I agree that in a way it's sort of a chick flick... but they tried to stay away from it...
a.) I think wiggs relationship is just used to emphasize how rock bottom she gets .
b.) you never or rarely meet the other men in the movie... who the hell was the groom?

I laughed during the movie. It's very true that there were part that lagged... also, I felt there was too much of the "fat" friend and not enough of the "slut-virgin" bridesmaids plot-line.

Wait - are you quoting and responding to yourself now?

I'm not sure what the point is of labeling the movie a chick flick though, even if you can shoehorn it into the definition.

I tend to use the term chick flick as a kind of shorthand for the movie equivilent of a romance novel. Which means long on romance and short on comedy.

I think the label could be misleading in this case. If the only description I had of the movie was the term "chick flick" I probably would never have gone to see it and would have missed a very funny movie. It was downright hilarious in some parts.

I did find faults with the movie (IMHO of course). I thought that some of the situations were overly contrived and blew my suspension of disbelief, even for this type of movie where outrageous situations are part of the plot. Particularly, the airplane scene and the bridal shower scene just didn't come off as believable at all.

Do you really think a warning label is necessary? A movie called "Bridesmaids" needs a warning label because <shocker> it is about women and is arguably a "chick flick". Whoa! Get right outta here!

I am shocked, SHOCKED!, that a Judd Apatow movie has elements that are similar to other Judd Apatow movies! Say it aint so, Archie! Say it aint so!

Yes, to show that I previously stated that I thought movie was funny and liked it. Matter of fact, it is in the first post.

Not all of his movies are the same. Some, like Funny People, are too long and try to get too serious with the dramedy business.

I liked Funny People, and although it did drag in the second act, I didn't mind that it had a serious theme mixed in with the comedy. In fact, I find it kind of new and interesting.

The redemption scene at the end for George was well done, in fact.

Yeah, that was kinda my take...

So?

I could probably make a case of just about every comedy being a chick flick...

Hangover is the story of men going through ridiculous obstacles to discover... love/friendship/happiness.

It was funny and I wouldn't necessarily call it a chick flick but I agree on the apatow syndrome. The movie was 15 minutes too long and had too long of a stretch without humor. The first hour and 20 minutes I was sold and then the last 45 minutes got kind of rough. I was more than ready to leave the theater when the movie ended. The last 45 minutes should have been shaved to 20-30 minutes to make a 1:45 hour movie.

So was Forgetting Sarah Marshall a chick flick?

Crude humor, appeals to both guys and girls, and both have generic plots that are identical.

FSM:

Guy unhappy, meets girl, both have fun, fight between the two, make up, happy ending.

Brides:

Girl unhappy, meets guy, both have fun, fight between the two, make up, happy ending.

Rocky is a chick flick:

Guy unhappy, meets girl, both have fun, fight between the two, make up, happy ending.

ET was a chick flick:

Kid unhappy, meets alien, both have fun, fight between the two, make up, happy ending.

Over-simplification rocks!
