For years I used a traditional riding mower and for the past 5 years I've paid someone to mow my property. Now I have the time to mow it myself, but I need a mower. I've never been on a zero turn, so I'm excited to see what it can do. What's the outdoor board's recommendation. Looking at something around 50"-54" cut

I’ve had a Gravely ZT50 with a Kawasaki engine for 8 years and couldn’t be more satisfied. Going to get another in about a year or 2.

As long as it has a Briggs or Kawasaki engine, I'm not picky.

Got a skag and a bad boy. Both have been good.

Change more bearings on bad boy because nothing is greasable.

ETA: I run 0w40 mobil1 in both.

Change deck belts once a year. Drive belts every two years.

Have had Gravely ZT52 with Kawasaki engine for three years and love that ole girl. No major problems just yearly tune ups. Put close to 150 hours on her each summer and she keeps on purring.

I bought a 60" Commercial Gravley 14 years ago and have flat out abused the thing. I mow 3 acres with it, half of which are bumpy and root infested.. My queer arse river birch trees rain limbs and I chomp em with the Gravley like it's a bushhog. It eats cypress knees for breakfast and plows thru clover like a demon possessed billy goat. I can't vouch for other zero turns because it's the only one I've ever had. But when it finally grenades I'm going to have a hard time buying anything else.....

Grasshopper. I cut 4 acres for 11 years in GA, then hauled it to Montana and now cut 3 acres plus all the trails on my place. They are expensive, but built like tanks. Mine is a 725D with a belly deck.

We love our Kubota commercial 54" zero turn but it was the last year that the gas engines were still kubota engines. I think now they use kohler or kawasaki for their gas engines. I wish we would have went with the diesel but so far the gasser has been great and it is paid for :)

The right answer might depend on how much you are mowing.

But my default answer if it's more than an 1.5 acre is a commercial zero turn. Doesn't have to be new.

I bought a 2005 Snapper Pro 48" with 175 hours on it for $1700 in 2011 and I still mow with it today. Just started it today for the first time. It has 850 hours on it now. Kawasaki 19hp engine.
Paid for itself a couple of times.

I might upgrade at the end of this year when they start to run sales. Saw a few decent deals last fall, but decided to wait another year.

Anyone that is down voting you because of this doesn't know what they're talking about. The B&S Vanguard is the best gasoline engine available.

Briggs is now where near what it use to be.
Vanguard engine is a different animal than what in a residential unit.

If your cutting under 2 acres most the residential brands will work fine.

Kubota.

End of discussion.

Seriously, I’ve run Kubota for years and they are beasts. Scag, Hustler, would be my choice if Kubota ever let me down. I ain’t hating on the others, I’ve just been incredibly pleased with Kubota equipment. Star Equipment and Sammy Broussard are great dealers if you’re in their areas.

Scag Tiger Cat here - abuse it. It’s a beast. Solid construction. Highly recommend
