Hustler and a Kaw engine...hard to beat.
Whichever brand you go with, buy from a dealer and not a big box store...there is a difference.

Kubota and no other. They have decided to have the best zero turns and it shows.

They don’t market well- don’t expect to see a cool ad or fanfare. They just make really good stuff.

Not bad, but give me a Kawasaki first.

The Kawasaki makes more power, that's for sure.

But for me it's more that all the shite attached to the engine block is made in Japan. Fuel pump, carb, intake. All good stuff.

The skag can cut at 9ish mph. The bad boy can cut at 6. That's a big difference on a few acres.

Are these mower dealers negotiable like car dealerships or is it pretty much sticker price?

I have a z7000 series Craftsman (MTD??.), 54” cut, 24HP and find it is perfect for my 1 acre lot. One of my sons also used it for cutting about 6-8 yards each 2 weeks a couple of summers. It does the job, is I easy to maintain, etc. I’d like the seat back to be higher but otherwise, it’s fast and comfortable. I caught it on a double sale price of $2400.

I got a residential xmark 50”. I’ve only used it once so far with a mulching kit on it. Like it just fine so far cuts at 7mph. I have a little less than an acre to cut so it’s a vast improvement from my walk behind.

My mother in law has an exmark and she has 8-10 acres of pure grass on a mostly flat plot of land with a side that is very hilly also.

i've cut the property a number of times to help out when she's tired or busy af, and that thing has the feeling of something you could beat to death and it endure any kind of torture. wicked quick, and that is very welcomed because i can get that whole property cut in about 4 hours.

Yes, they have wiggle room. Probably not 25% like a Ford or Chevy dealer, but you should be able to talk them down 10% or more. Fall is when they start to clearance.

Cutting about 2.5 acres. Budget is 5k

With that budget, you will need to look at some residential or semi-residential models. You can easily spend $15,000 -$20,000 on a high end commercial mower but you don’t need that according to the acreage you’ll be cutting.

I have had a John Deere 54” for 5 years and it has performed well with zero issues. I cut about 3.5 acres.

As someone else suggested, I would go directly to the dealer and not a box store. Most brands will have commercial grade, semi-commercial and residential. You should be able to find something in your budget.

Good luck!

Zero turn you control the handles similar to pushing a shopping cart. Put pressure on one more than the other to turn. When pushing a shopping cart when you turn pushing one side more it is the same as a zero turn as each lap bar controls a transmission.

If your yard residential under 1-1/2 acres residential is fine.

Then if 2 acres to 3 acres or more you would go up in price $4k range for a unit with ZT2800 transmission.

Now some people opt to go with large property owner commercial unit $5k - $8k.

It don’t sound like you need a municipal mower with Parker pumps.

My best selling residential line in order is the Cub Cadet Ultima best price & good little unit , then Toro line similar , and then Gravely for residential units which cost more not getting much more but your paying for it. In the residential unless the person uses it for commercial use I don’t see a lot of them back in for warranty repairs.

Most dealers carry the same line as a homecenter except most keep them inside have less water damage issues and sun fading the unit. Plus you know the deck is level.

As far as price negotiations this year good luck. Most manufacturers are coming down with price increases and there is less mowers to sell due to production issues.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Went to a local Bad boy/ Spartan dealer and just purchased the 54" Bad boy with the Kawasaki motor. I like the Spartan with the same set up, but the Spartan has a digital push button start and the salesman said they were known to have issues with those, although Spartan has made improvements on them. Both mowers were priced the same, but we went with the Bad boy. The Spartan was prettier, but the bad boy checked all the boxes. Looking forward to getting that first mowing in.

We became a dealer here at Hill’s Equipment in Livingston and are waiting on mowers now. They should be in within 2 weeks. We will carry Dixie chopper, grass hopper, and big dog (hustler painted red basically identical mower both owned by the same company as a strategy to be able to have dealers closer together). I’m not sure if any of those are what you’ll be interested in, but I’d love to help you out and give you the best deal we can. I’m new to this, but I feel we’d be able to match or beat the price of any other dealerships within driving distance.
