I have a 7 year old that is ready to start hunting with me. I want to get him a rifle for Christmas. Looking for recommendations. He is really nervous about recoil so something pretty easy. I would also like something that he can grow with that can be used for a while

30-30 lever action. My dad gave me his and I will give it to my son. Great deer rifle. Not a new flashy cartridge, but a classic.

I guess I should have specified, more looking for models that people have had good luck with, already decided on either .243 or 6.5

.243 Savage bolt action

Low recoil but plenty of BANG.

You could do a lot worse than the Ruger American Rifle Compact.

I have a savage axis in 243 for my daughter it’s a great gun that I picked up for under 200$ on sale at Walmart. It will shoot almost as good as my 800-1500$ guns. Fit and finish is not the same but it’s accurate as all shite and I don’t know anyone I know who has had a bad one (at least 12 or more guns)
If I was buying again I would buy a 7mm 08 due to being able to step it up in grains as they get older. I know of six year old girls who shoot 7mm 08s

Look up hornady reduced recoil rounds. I have a box for my 308 for the kids. Going to pick up a bolt action 308 for them to shoot. When they get older they can go to a normal round and resight the rifle for the new cartridge.

Really works.

I have my 5 yr old shooting my 30-30 at the moment. I put a recoil pad on it and it doesn’t phase him at all.

My 6yr old daughter is shooting my AR in 6.5 grendel. I have it topped with a burris ff3 right now and limiting her to about 50 yards for this season.

Savage if you want a good gun for a low price, Tikka if you want to go a little nicer for more money.

Im looking hard at the savage 110 engage with the accustock system. I think that gun can grow with him til adulthood. Just don’t know if it gets quite small enough for youth

my 13 year old (then 12) handled the 6.5 creedmore I got him last year easily. Very little kick. He has shot at one deer and it dropped the deer on the spot but it was a spine shot. I've hunted with it a few times but didn't have occasion to take a shot with it while hunting.

Pretty much anything semi automatic will reduce recoil significantly. Shot a PSA AR10 in 308 compared to a bolt action 7mag and 7mm-08. Even shooting 7mm-08 reduced recoil rounds did not make that rifle (Ruger American) more mild than the AR10.

But there’s a caveat - most 308 semi auto platforms are heavy. So keep that in mind.
