Yeah I can’t bring myself to do it either. My first deer with a bow was a big doe, dropped her where she stood. I was so excited because I had been bow hunting for probably 5 years without killing a deer with it. Then 2 little fawns walked out the thicket. Ruined all of my excitement.
Last year In Missouri I thought I had 2 does come in so I shot the bigger one with my bow, she only took a couple steps before laying down and dying. The other one turned out to be a yearling, no spots, but the thing was much bigger than the yearlings here. It stayed around her for about 5-10 minutes, then ran off. It for sure was old enough to survive on its own, but I still felt like a piece of shite watching it wait for it’s mom to get up and continue on their way to the corn field.

don't. Can't stand to watch a fawn paw and kick at it's mom. I'm soft, I know

You're not soft. You're just not an a-hole.

I usually wait until the spots aren't visible but they'd probably survive by the time season is open. I always feel like a dick when I shoot a doe and the yearling stands around.

We are in Madison Parish. Our biologist told us not to even think about shooting a doe until after October 15th due to fawns. I have em on camera now that are only a couple weeks old. I personally don’t shoot any doe with a fawn. I look for the ones that did not have a fawn or are so old they can’t have a fawn.

I read a MSU study years ago that recommended shooting does with fawns. They said the fawns would survive. You had better odds of shooting a doe and also if it had bred once or twice it was time to for it to be replaced. I agree with this in principle. I have trouble practicing it the older I get. I watched piles of does with young ones and didn’t shoot any of them last year. I think the longer you wait for the perfect time to shoot one, the less likely you are to do it. I say every year I’m going to shoot does early and often. This is the year.

If I can make sure the bullet kills the fawn too

Otherwise... Nope. Not doing it.

Hungry first. Softy second.

Nope I don’t need deer meat bad enough to kill a mom with her yearlings.

I don't. But archery season doesn't open here in Alabama til the 15th and even then it's antlered deer only till the 25th. By the time muzzleloader season is over mid-November it's not much of an issue.

Back when I was young and dumb and on DMAP, I'd shoot the doe and the next day shoot the fawn (no spots) from the same stand. We had a ton of deer.
These days, I rarely shoot a doe. I like seeing deer and letting my kids have a shot. I just love spending time in the woods with the family now. It's funny how things change once we have kids and get older.

I do my level best to kill 2 the first 2 days of rifle season. 2 does and a buck is about what we eat in a year, so I'm not shooting more than 2.

As a general rule, no. If I see a little one with her, I let her walk.

However, we have so many deer here in MO that we need to really kill a bunch of does.

I wait til spots are gone. Another reason I mostly dont hunt til November. Also there are very few deer I want to shoot on a day that reaches 80+. I know Im lazy

I don’t, but I don’t look down on those who do. I think part of my reluctancy comes from having so many trail cams up that catch pics of the does with fawns before the season starts.

If you need to feed your family, yes.

If you are just filling your freezer, no, there will be other opportunities later on.

Can you give a reason why this would the way to go?
