Would you be comfortable with a Ruger 10/22 in a home defense situation?

Depends. What am I defending my home against?

I wouldn't, more for possible reliability issues than stopping power.

Give me the one that weighs 3 pounds and has a carbon Fiber barrel with a red dot and I will be fine

I wouldn't consider it ideal but it's better than nothing

I have a 10/22, but don’t use it for home defense. Rather, I have a 12ga pump with a pistol grip, 18” barrel w/full length magazine. It is loaded with #4 buckshot for those that want to know…

Absolutely.

22lr reliability issues are way overblown (imo). I can’t remember the last time I had a failure to feed or fire.

I almost exclusively use any 22 from cci in my rifle/pistol.

If I dedicated a 10/22 for home defense, I would load it with CCI Mini Mag segmented 40 grainers. Those segmented rounds are bad to the bone. I have taken beavers with the “quiet” (710fps) segmented load. I have a boatload of the segmented mini mags and the CCI stingers.

Not ideal but with good ammo and a big reliable magazine, id definitely take it over a baseball bat.

I would. Short rifle with. 25 round mag could do some serious damage.

To paraphrase famed lawman Bill Jordan, ballistics are fine, but accuracy is final.

22LR, such as Winchester Silvertip, shot accurately, will kill someone graveyard dead

Sure, if it's all I could get. Put a few in the center of mass and then start shooting the face/head till they go down or go away. Nobody wants to get shot, even with a .22. Like the guy above said, .22s have killed lots and lots of people.

The trick, though, may be to stay alive long enough for it to do its work!

Is that your only option?
If so I would make sure that the gun is cleaned and decarbed very well and use full power cci segmented rounds.
I would plan to dump a mag and beat the assailant with the buttstock.
Good thing about a 22 is you should be able to put 5-7 rounds on target very quick.

Curiosity has me wondering. Can you tell us why you're asking this question?

The beauty of this option (especially if you choose a more reliable version, like Kidd) is that you can put a 1x4 Steiner on it, add a suppressor, buy subsonic rounds, and hit a lot of stuff without that stuff knowing where the hitter is.

This helps when 'home defense' includes both inside and outside the home.

Oh you've done it now

Back on topic... I wouldn't ever consider using a 10/22 for home defense unless it was the absolute last firearm available

You’re basing this on pure personal bias and not on ballistic evidence.

22LR will kill you graveyard dead close in and will penetrate into human tissue at long distance (at least 400 yards).
