quote:

The rut starts at the first cool snap and doesn't end until all does are bred!.... Way to much is put into the rut especially in Louisiana. Thats why you still see spotted fawns well into September.

The pre rut is a time when the younger immature bucks are feeling antsy, but NO does are even close to being ready.

Sudden scrape activity like somebody turned on a lite switch, is the best indicator. Usually happens right after thanksgiving in areas that i know about. It is late this year and is happening right now. The Hot weather i think delayed it.

Alot of the chasing is the younger bucks just doing what we did in our 20's. Chasing.
The big boys often stage near heavy doe traffic and scent check passing does, rather than run all over the place. If he finds one in esterous, he will trail and expose himself, but they just don't chase by instinct non ready does.

Been in the woods all week and still no movement. The heat obviously is a factor. Should be wide open soon

I have chosen to get my sauna visit in for the 4th day out of the last 5 days. Not seeing any chasing. Still seeing some freshened up scrapes.

Had a young buck after a doe this morning. Multiple pictures on a camera Christmas week of does walking by and bucks 4-5 minutes after with their nose to ground and tail in the air.

I hunt in Osyka. Killed one chasing last year the beginning of 2nd week in January. It should start here anytime now. It’s usually this week or next with full blown rut here.

Been at my camp since Wednesday and they ain’t doing shite right now in this heat. Hoping the cold weather moving in sat night will get em going.

I have to work today but hunting tomorrow on our place just north of Woodville. Thursday looks to be another day similar to Sunday . I’ll be in the stand then too.

I hunt just west of Centreville and the rut seemed to kick with the temperature drop this weekend. I saw several bucks chasing does and deer were moving throughout the day. I also saw the best buck of the year mid-day Saturday when the wind was howling- he walked across an open field about 75-yards from the front door of my camp.

Had a buck come in just to eat a little corn from the feeder. 8pt. State legal but young. Let him walk. Was there for about 10-15 minutes.

Loggers have been on my place for the last 2 weeks. Finally finished and moved off yesterday. I had a nice 8Pt show up in my plot around 1 pm today.
