I don’t discredit them but you answered all the reasons in your post and follow up post, the higher pellet count of steel shot shells as well as being able to pattern large diameter pellets. Call me poor but im not paying $1 per shell for pass shooting dos Gris and water swatting pooldeaus.

Nothing wrong with a 20 gauge, but

mergansers

that's not what we call them.

I've been using my youth model 870 on Woodie shoots the last few years.

Based on how well it shot 3" #4 lead, it would be a lethal son of a gun with 3" #5 bismuth.

Can't quite go the $1+/shot on my budget.

It's pretty simple. I use:

20 Ga. for squirrels, rabbits, dove, quail, pheasant, etc.

12 Ga. for duck, geese, turkey, and buckshot for large mammals.

Of course a 20 Ga. can kill a duck, goose, or turkey but a 12 Ga. is just much better suited for it.

It is an H&R handi-rifle. Once I was invited on the first trip I took to Illinois, I searched slug guns at nauseam. The ONLY one in the state of LA was at Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop. I searched every gun store in South LA and had an epifany to call Jeff's big arse to see if he had one. Low and behold, he had 1.

I sent my Dad up there that afternoon to buy it for the cost of $175. Apparently, H&R was bought out by Remington or some other manufacturer earlier that year and is no longer producing these fine firearms. I also have one in 45-70 that is no longer used.

dont quite understand why people believe that a 20 gauge is less capable at killing a dove/duck/goose than a 12 gauge. This season, I have switched over to shooting my 20 ga for ducks and geese purely out of preference and Im amazed at the ignorant comments ive heard people say about a 20 gauge. If I shoot a Boss 3" #3 (copper platted bismuth) shooting 1350 fps out of an extra full choke that shoots a 80% pattern on a 30 inch circle in my 20 ga, how is that less effective than #2 steel traveling at 1400 fps and patterning a sub 70% pattern in a 12 gauge?

quote:

Been shooting them this year and love them. The reason I went with bismuth is that I know steel doesnt pattern well for me in that gun and if I were shooting steel I would be at a severe disadvantage (shite patterns + alot less same sized pellets as 12 guage loads = no bueno) but a smaller shot size with a denser and more malleable metal puts me on the same playing field as a 12 gauge

You compare bismuth to steel and say that the 20 ga compares favorable and then in your next post you say you can't compare steel out of the 20 gauge.

I don't think anyone discredits the 20 gauge when used for the proper game. Using bismuth, the 20 definitely compares.

BUT If you want to know why people prefer a 12 gauge for ducks and geese you pretty much answered your own question.

and your bismuth is ~ $1.3 per shell
12 gauge steel is less than a $1 per shell.

I don't hunt waterfowl, but I've shot doves with a 20 ga my whole life. Never cared what people thought about it.

I like the 20 as a field gun because I can carry more shells without feeling overloaded. Plus the 20g. Brenneke slugs are a hammer on whitetail.

I have that same H&R 20 ga slug gun and I would stretch it to 200 in the right circumstances. It shoots amazing.
I also switched to 20 ga Turkey gun this past spring. 1187 youth with tss. Killed a bird at 42 yards. I love shooting a 20 ga.

This is something I am hearing more and more of people doing during turkey season. I imagine it's nice carrying a 20 ga around in the woods during turkey season
