I dont quite understand why people believe that a 20 gauge is less capable at killing a dove/duck/goose than a 12 gauge. This season, I have switched over to shooting my 20 ga for ducks and geese purely out of preference and Im amazed at the ignorant comments ive heard people say about a 20 gauge. If I shoot a Boss 3" #3 (copper platted bismuth) shooting 1350 fps out of an extra full choke that shoots a 80% pattern on a 30 inch circle in my 20 ga, how is that less effective than #2 steel traveling at 1400 fps and patterning a sub 70% pattern in a 12 gauge? What is yalls take on the topic OB?

Also, on average there are ab a 25 pellet difference between the 20ga #3 vs 12 ga #2 so I understand that argument

People dont, at least in my circles. I know a few grown men who do all their shotgunning with a 20 ga and dont even own a 12ga. They kill as much ducks/rabbits/squirrels per shell as the 12 ga guys and in at least one case definitely more.

My 20's sxs shotguns are lighter guns and don't play nice with my shoulder when shooting duck loads.

$26 a box of 20

Been shooting them this year and love them. The reason I went with bismuth is that I know steel doesnt pattern well for me in that gun and if I were shooting steel I would be at a severe disadvantage (shite patterns + alot less same sized pellets as 12 guage loads = no bueno) but a smaller shot size with a denser and more malleable metal puts me on the same playing field as a 12 gauge

We do a lot of wing shooting around here. Most of my circle prefers the 20ga, except for duck hunting.

20 ga is my go-to for dove, rabbit, squirrel, & pheasant. light weight, easy to move with in the brush & woods. I actually prefer my O/U compared to the pogo stick A-5 I've had for 40 yrs. But that A-5 was my first gun and I'll never get rid of it.

Well yeah, there is a big difference

But thats my point, why do people buy into this stereotype that in order to kill a big duck or goose, you need a 12 guage to do the job?

Is 20 gauge steel cheaper than 12? I've never paid attention, but I assume not. Of course the BOSS shells are quite pricey, so the question should be why NOT use a 12 with steel?

Now the MFer shooting the 10guage across the river from me on opening day has some splaining to do.

My next significant gun purchase will either be a nice auto 20ga or 16ga. When dove season rolls around my family fights over who gets to shoot pow pows 20ga A5.

Price is kinda up there but quite honestly, I would probably still shoot Boss w a 12 if I were going to shoot a 12 after seeing their performance now. I was skeptical at first but once I saw what they were capable of doing, Im probably not going to switch back...

I see no advantage for a 20ga., therefore no reason to not have a 12. Unless you're uneasy about recoil, then keep using your husband's 20.

It's just not a man sized gun baw, if you can't handle a 12 gauge, just admit it. Don't try to make the 20 out to be adequate though, just turn in 3 man cards and have fun killing less critters

Five years ago, I purchased a single shot 20 GA with a rifled barrel to gun hunt in the Midwest. After putting a scope on it, I am dialed-in at 125 yards and feel confident out to 160 or so with this gun. It has killed 9 whitetails to date with one shot, all dropped dead. I was completely bewildered that a 20 GA could be dead-on balls accurate at 100 yards, much less 125 zero.

This gun is quickly becoming my go-to for deer hunting in all areas. I don't care to shoot one more than 100 yards or so these days and prefer to be in the woods over open areas.

After seeing this thread, I am going to buy 4Junior his first 20 GA for Christmas.
